ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy freshman men's soccer player Derek Vogel has been named the Patriot League / Brine Rookie of the Week after helping Navy to a 1-1-0 record last week, the league office announced on Monday afternoon.
It marked the fourth Rookie of the Week award won by Vogel this year, setting a new Patriot League record in the process. The Rookie of the Week award has been handed out since the 2001 season. Four other players, including junior goalkeeper Aaron Dupere (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) in 2010, held the previous record with three weekly honors.
Vogel, a Long Beach, Calif., native, won four of the 11 Rookie of the Week citations handed out during the 2012 season.
After playing all season as a center back, Vogel was moved up to forward in the second half of last Wednesday's contest with Howard, responding by scoring his third and fourth goals of the year and dishing out an assist in the 3-1 victory, all coming in the second half. Vogel's two goals were the most for a Navy freshman in a game since 1993 and he became the fifth freshman ever to net two goals in a contest. In addition, his five points were the most for a Navy freshman in a match since 1978 and the second most by a freshman in school history.
On Saturday, he would add an assist on Navy's first goal during the loss to Colgate and recorded a team-best five shots against the Raiders.
He ranked second among Patriot League freshmen in scoring, behind teammate Thomas Shiiba (Swarthmore, Pa.), tallying 10 points on four goals and two assists.
Vogel and his teammates wrapped up the 2012 season on Saturday night, finishing with a 7-7-3 overall record.
