Shelly, Barnes Garner Academic Honors

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- A pair of Navy men's soccer players received CoSIDA Academic All-District 2 honors recently announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Tom Shelly and Evan Barnes both received the honor in voting done by sports information directors across the United States. Both Navy players were named to the All-District 2 Second Team.
Shelly, a senior defenseman from Crofton, Md., who served as the team captain in 2006 for the Mids, earned the honor after appearing in 14 games, scoring two points (1 g, 0 a). He played in 60 games during his career, drawing 55 starts and scoring three points (1 g, 1 a) in his four years at Navy. He guided a Navy defense as the center back during his four years at Navy and helped a defense show steady improvement during his career. He sports a 3.50 GPA in systems engineering.
Barnes, a junior goalkeeper from Dublin, Ohio, earns the first academic honor of his career. On the field, Barnes started 11 games, posting a 3-6-2 record with a 1.28 GAA and a .746 save percentage. He posted a pair of shutouts on the season against Cal Poly and Colgate. During the Cal Poly contest, he recorded a Navy season-best nine saves en route to his 44 saves in 2006. Barnes owns a 3.82 GPA in honors systems engineering.
The Mids posted a 5-9-2 record on the season.
