ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy senior midfielder Sam Miller was named to the Patriot League men's soccer all-academic team, the Patriot League office announced today. It marks the second straight year that Miller was named to the 11-member team.
Miller, a senior midfielder from Tulsa, Okla., was named to the academic team for the second straight season after serving as the team captain on this year's squad and owning a 3.95 cumulative GPA in mechanical engineering. His GPA is the highest of any player on the league's all-academic squad and he is a three-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor. Earlier this week, he was named to the Capital One Academic All-District II first team for the second straight year and to the all-district team for the third time in his career (was 2nd-team all-district as a sophomore). He currently ranks 19th on the Academic Order of Merit (out of 1,135) in the senior class and has had four straight semesters (entering fall 2011) of 4.00 GPAs.
Miller has received his top service-selection choice of Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD).
On the field, Miller has played in 67 of a possible 71 games during his career, drawing starts in 45 of them. The 67 games played are among the all-time leaders in Academy history. This year, Miller has helped the team to its first Patriot League Tournament appearance since 2001, by starting all 18 games as a defensive midfielder and contributing an assist in a win over UNC Greensboro. For his career, Miller has nine points (4 g, 1 a).
The Navy men's soccer team will battle top-seeded American in the Patriot League Tournament on Friday at 11:00 am at Washington, D.C.'s, Reeves Field on the campus of American University.
