ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy soccer players Alex Foskett and Sam Miller were both named to the CoSIDA / ESPN Academic All-American teams, the organization announced on Thursday morning.
Navy was the lone Patriot League school represented on the three University division teams and was one of six teams (South Carolina, Butler, St. Francis (Pa.), Akron, Navy and Stanford) to have two players mentioned. Foskett and Miller are Navy's first Academic-All American since Evan Barnes earned third-team honors in 2007. It marks the first time that Navy has had two players win Academic All-American honors in the same year, and the pair are only the third and fourth recipients of the honor (Donald Field in 1996, 1997; Evan Barnes in 2007).
Foskett, a senior defenseman from Manassas, Va., was named to the Academic All-American second team after compiling a 3.73 cumulative GPA in electrical engineering through last year's spring semester. Foskett started all 16 games as a defenseman for the Midshipmen, which finished the 2010 season with a 7-5-4 overall record. Foskett ranked tied for third on the team in assists with two and started all 35 games over the last two seasons. For his career, he played in 41 games, starting the last 35 contests. He was named to the 2010 Navy / UMBC Kickoff Classic All-Tournament team and was selected as the Patriot League's Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 27. He was previously named to the CoSIDA / ESPN Academic All-District II first-team and the Patriot League All-Academic men's soccer team.
Miller, Miller, a junior midfielder from Tulsa, Okla., was selected to the Academic All-American third-team as he owns a 3.93 GPA in mechanical engineering, ranking 28th on the academic order of merit and 59th on the junior class' overall order of merit at Navy. The two-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll selection saw action in all 16 games with 11 starts in the 2010 season. Miller scored two goals (against Wofford and Holy Cross) this year to rank tied for fourth on the team in goals, while ranking second on the squad with 25 shots. For his career, Miller has played in 49 games with 27 starts. He has scored four goals for eight points during his career. He was also previously named to the CoSIDA / ESPN Academic All-District II first-team and the Patriot League All-Academic men's soccer team.
Akron's Kofi Sarkodie was named the CoSIDA / ESPN Academic All-American Player of the Year.
