Navy Men's Soccer Draws VCU in the NCAA First Round
Nov. 18, 2013
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The 2013 Patriot League Men's Soccer Champion Navy Midshipmen (15-3-2) will play at VCU (11-7-2) in the NCAA First Round on Thursday at 7:00 PM at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond. The winner of the Navy-VCU game will advance to the NCAA Second Round to play at No. 14 Wake Forest (9-5-5) on Sunday at 5:00 PM in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Navy defeated Holy Cross, 2-0, on Sunday to win its first Patriot League Tournament. Head coach Dave Brandt has Navy making its 11th NCAA Tournament appearance and first since 1988. Navy was a perfect 9-0-0 during league play and earned the right to host the postseason tournament as the league's regular season champion.
Navy enters the NCAA Tournament on a 14-game winning streak, the longest active streak in the nation.
VCU earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. The Rams fell to George Mason, 3-2, in overtime in the Atlantic 10 semifinals last Friday. VCU also hosted an NCAA Tournament game in 2012, receiving a bye to the second round where they fell to Syracuse, 3-2, in double overtime.
Navy and VCU are 1-1-1 against each other all-time. The teams attempted to play a game in Annapolis in 2012, but the contest was called off due to inclement whether. After a two-hour lightning delay to start the game, the teams played 2:24 minutes of action before another lightning strike pulled both teams off the field.
Two of the three teams that defeated Navy during the regular season have also made the 48-team NCAA Tournament (UMBC and St. Francis Brooklyn).
