Video of Fries' goal vs. Holy Cross
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy men's soccer junior forward Geoff Fries has been named the NAAA Athlete of the Week, presented by Rolls-Royce, for the week ending November 18.
Fries scored the game-winning goal in the 39th minute in Navy's 2-0 win over Holy Cross on Sunday in the Patriot League Championship. Fries was sent free on a breakaway by senior Patrick Sopko, who had a highlight-reel bicycle kick in the midfield. Fries raced ahead to control the ball and then beat the goalkeeper to the right corner.
It was Fries' first goal of the season.
The Midshipmen moved up to No. 19 in this week's Top Drawer Soccer Poll and No. 25 in the College Soccer News Poll. Navy is listed as the first team in those `receiving votes' in the NSCAA Poll.
Navy will play at VCU on Thursday at 7:00 PM in the NCAA First Round.
NavySports.com spoke with Fries after the championship about his game-winning goal.
Can you describe how your goal was set up and what you saw?
"So the ball came off Grant (Valenstein), through to Patty. I just started running because I knew Pat could do that. It takes a great touch and he flicked it over and I got through. The keeper started to come up and then dropped back and it was an easy finish."
How important was it to take an early lead in the game?
"It was very important. That was their fourth game in nine days, I think. They played Tuesday, Friday and today (Sunday), so they were feeling it. We knew if we got one early on them they would struggle. The whole first half we were able to get on top of them."
How does it feel to win the Patriot League Championship?
"It's awesome. We are going to the NCAAs for the first time in 25 years. It's incredible and we are doing it with the best group of guys."
