ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy men's soccer player Derek Vogel was named to the CollegeSoccerNews.com Freshman All-America third team, the organization announced recently. It marks the second time in school history a Navy player has earned freshman All-America accolades, as junior Martin Sanchez was a second-team honoree following the 2010 season.
Vogel, a 6-3, 200-pound freshman from Long Beach, Calif., who was named the Patriot League's Rookie of the Year, was the lone Patriot League member named to the squad. During the season, he was named Patriot League / BRINE Rookie of the Week four times, setting a league record for most Rookie of the Week awards in Patriot League history.
After playing all season as a center back, Vogel was moved up to forward for the last two games of the season and responded by scoring his third and fourth goals of the year and dishing out an assist in a 3-1 victory over Howard. Vogel's two goals against the Bison were the most for a Navy freshman in a game since 1993 and he became the fifth freshman ever to net two goals in a contest. In addition, his five points were the most for a Navy freshman in a match since 1978 and the second most by a freshman in school history. In the season finale against Colgate, he added an assist on Navy's first goal while recording a team-best five shots against the Raiders.
He would also score goals in wins over 20th-ranked George Mason and Lafayette in back-to-back games in mid-September.Vogel ranked second among Patriot League freshmen in scoring, behind teammate Thomas Shiiba (Swarthmore, Pa.), tallying 10 points on four goals and two assists.
Vogel became Navy's second Patriot League Rookie of the Year honoree and the first since Michael Paisant won the honor in 1997. He was one of two freshmen (Bucknell's Chris Thorsheim) named to the all-Patriot League team, as he earned second-team accolades.
Navy finished 7-7-3 overall and will return nine starters for the 2013 season.
