College Soccer News All-America Teams
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - One week after earning All-America honors from the NSCAA, Navy junior defenseman Joseph Greenspan has been named to the College Soccer News All-America Third Team.
Greenspan was the 2013 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, an All-Patriot League First Team honoree and was named to the Patriot League All-Tournament Team. He was named to the NSCAA All-America Third Team and the NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region First Team.
Greenspan, a center back, helped Navy rank 15th in the NCAA in goals-against average (0.70) while posting a school record 11 shutouts. Navy shut out six straight opponents in the regular season and also had a four-game shutout streak that included the Army-Navy Star Match, two Patriot League Tournament wins and a 3-0 blanking of VCU in the NCAA First Round. During Patriot League Regular Season play, Navy boasted a 0.32 goals-against average while shutting out six of nine opponents.
Greenspan also ranked second on the team with seven goals and was second with 14 points. He routinely came up on set pieces and corner kicks and converted all three of his penalty kick attempts.
Greenspan scored the game-winning goal in double overtime in Navy's 1-0 win over Army in the Star Match. He also had the game-winning goal in Navy's 1-0 victory at American and scored an insurance goal in Navy's 2-0 win over Holy Cross in the Patriot League Championship.
Greenspan was named the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Player of the Week on November 12 after the Army-Navy game and was also named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week on October 15. He was named to the College Soccer News Team of the Week on November 12 and was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week on September 23.
Navy (16-4-2, 9-0-0 PL) won the 2013 Patriot League Regular Season and Tournament Championships and advanced to the NCAA Second Round. Navy defeated VCU in the NCAA First Round, 3-0, to earn its first NCAA Tournament win since 1971. The Mids had the nation's longest winning streak at 15 games this year.
