Wilson, Swenson Earn CSFL Player of the Week Accolades
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy sprint football had two players earn Collegiate Sprint Football League weekly accolades as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon. Sheppard Wilson (Charlotte, N.C.) was named Defensive Player of the Week, while Jared Swenson (Seymour, Wis.) was dubbed Special Teams Player of the Week. It is the first weekly accolades of the season for the Midshipmen.
The duo helped the sprint football team improve to 2-0 on the season with a 41-14 victory on the road against Mansfield on Saturday afternoon.
Leading 17-14, Wilson recorded an interception, which he returned 19 yards for a touchdown that sparked a 24-point fourth quarter and secured the victory. The junior finished the game with three tackles (two solo), including half a sack. Along with the 19-yard interception return for a touchdown, Wilson had a pair of pass break ups. He got a hand on a Mansfield punt for a block that set up Navy's first touchdown of the game.
On special teams, Swenson tallied 11 of the Mids' 41 points. The sophomore was true on five PAT attempts, while also adding a pair of field goals. Swenson split the uprights on field goals from 35 and 27 yards out, helping the team cruise to the victory. In addition, Swenson booted one kickoff 65 yards for a touchback.
Navy returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 30 as the Midshipmen host Franklin Pierce in the home opener. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m. at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Admission to the game is free.
