    Navy Begins Quest for 32nd CSFL Championship on Friday
    The Navy sprint football team (2-0, 0-0 CSFL) will begin its efforts to capture its 32nd CSFL Championship when the Midshipmen open up league play on Friday night at Cornell (2-0, 0-0 CSFL). Navy's owns the most CSFL titles in league history with 31, including back-to-back championships and a 15-game winning streak since the start of the 2004 season.

    Navy Remains Perfect at Pride Bowl, Beats Army, 31-21
    Junior running back Richard Engel (Medford, N.J.) ran for 134 yards and two touchdowns and was named the game's Most Valuable Player to lead the Navy sprint football team to a 31-21 victory over Army in front of 5,381 fans at Pride Bowl XXVIII two weeks ago.
    Engel scored Navy's first touchdown of the game on a four-yard run to put the Midshipmen ahead, 7-6, in the first quarter. The junior also posted a 32-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to push Navy ahead, 31-21.
    In addition to Engel's 134 yards, Harris rushed for 50 yards on eight carries and Marsh gained 33 yards on 12 rushing attempts as the Midshipmen churned out 239 yards on the ground.
    Marsh connected on 12-of-18 pass attempts for 145 yards and a touchdown. Tellson accounted for 77 yards with five receptions, while senior Mitchell Dow (Yorktown, Va.) hauled in three passes for 20 yards and sophomore Nash Bagby (Waco, Texas) made a pair of receptions for 21 yards.
    Sophomore Brian Smith (Gainesville, Fla.) made a career-best 11 tackles, two of which resulted in a loss, to lead a Navy defense that held Army to 236 yards of total offense, including only 43 yards rushing in the second half. Senior captain Ryan Engle (Reed City, Mich.) recorded eight stops, while senior Dorian Smith (Alexandria, Va.) posted seven tackles and an interception and senior Danny Davis (Phoenix, Ariz.) made seven tackles with a sack.

    Scouting Cornell
    The Big Red join the Midshipmen as the other undefeated team heading into CSFL play, going 2-0 in their non-league contests. Cornell defeated Penn, 20-12, in the Allegiance Bowl before posting a 29-0 shutout at Princeton one week later.
    Much of the Big Red offensive success has come off the arm of quarterback Zak Dentes. The sophomore has completed 23-of-29 pass attempts for 329 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. Sam Coe has hauled in eight passes for 82 yards, while Jason Remillard has six receptions for 101 yards and two touchdowns.
    Cornell's defense has been stifling, recording 25 tackles for a loss, 11 of which are sacks, three interceptions and 14 pass breakups and four fumble recoveries.

    Series History
    Navy owns a 47-12-2 advantage over Cornell in thee all-time series. The Midshipmen have won eight-straight over the Big Red, and 15 of the last-16 contests between the two teams. The Midshipmen possess a 22-8-1 mark against the Big Red in Ithaca, coming away victorious in each of their last-four visits to the Empire State. Last season, Navy's defense held Cornell scoreless in two games with scoring a total of 48 points in picking up a pair of victories.

    15-Straight Victories
    The Midshipmen ran their winning streak to 15 games, dating back to the start of the 2004 season, with their 31-21 victory over Army at Pride Bowl XXVIII in Union, N.J., on Sept. 24. During its current winning streak, Navy has outscored the opposition, 626-141, a 32.3-point average margin of victory. Since the middle of the 2001 season, Navy has also won 32 of its last 33 contests.

    Navy in CSFL Season Openers
    The Midshipmen have won seven-consecutive CSFL season openers, allowing less than 15 points in each of those contests. Navy has opened its league play with Cornell during each of the last-11 season, posting a 10-1 record against the Big Red. The Mids enter Friday's contest with an all-time record of 52-6-2 (.883) in league-opening tilts.

    Engel Runs Wild
    Junior running back Richard Engel (Medford, N.J.) posted his first-career 100-yard rushing day with his 134 yards on 15 carries with two touchdowns against Army in the Pride Bowl two weeks ago. His 134 yards were the most by a Navy rusher since Roger Callahan gained 136 yards in a 37-0 win against Princeton on Oct. 29, 1999. Engel's rushing total was also the highest in an Army-Navy game since Matt Sobecki churned out 136 yards against the Black Knights in a 24-21, Star Game win at West Point on Nov. 7, 1997.

    Taking it Back the Other Way
    Sophomore James Campbell's (Kansas City, Mo.) 39-yard interception return during Navy's season-opening win at Johns Hopkins on Sept. 10 was the first of his career and the team's longest interception return since Patrick Flores' 45-yard return against Frostburg State on Sept. 29, 2002.

    Passing Game Taking and Not Giving
    Navy's passing game has not thrown an interception this season, connecting on 24-of-36 pass attempts for 402 yards with a touchdown. Since the start of the 2004 season, the Midshipmen passing attack has fired 30 touchdowns passes with only eight interceptions in completing 182-of-307 passes (59.3%) for 3,141 yards (209.4 ypg).

    More Than a Week, Better be Prepared
    The Midshipmen have won 13-consecutive games when given more than a week to prepare for its next opponent, dating back to the start of the 2001 season. Over its last-10 seasons, Navy has recorded a 21-1 mark in games with more than a week to prepare.

    30 a Game Leaves Opponents at Bay
    The Midshipmen have come away victorious in 38-straight games in which they score over 30 points. Navy has surpassed the 30-point mark in 38 of its last 75 games.

    Team Scoring Streak
    Navy has put points on the scoreboard in each of its last 108 games, scoring in double figures in 97 of those contests. The Midshipmen have not been shut out in a game since dropping a 12-0 decision at Princeton on Oct. 21, 1989.

    Stifling Defense
    In their last 51 games, the Midshipmen defense has held the opposition to 20 or fewer points on 38 occasions, coming away victorious in each of those contests. The last time Navy lost a game in which its defense yielded less than 21 points came on Oct. 23, 1998, dropping a 17-14 decision to Penn.

    Game Decided by 14+ Points, Advantage Navy
    Navy has won each of the last-25 games decided by 14 or more points, dating to its 42-10 victory over Cornell on Oct. 14, 2001, in the Pride Bowl only 33 games ago.

    Navy Sprint Football in the Spotlight
    This year's Star Game against Army on Nov. 3, in Annapolis will be televised by CSTV on a tape-delayed basis on Sunday, Nov. 5, at 9 p.m. Pete Medhurst and Scott Zolak, both who serve on the CSTV announcing crew for Navy's varsity football contests, will call the action for the game. The televised game marks the fourth-consecutive year that Navy sprint football has received national televised coverage. In 2003, the Midshipmen defeated Army, 14-0, in the Pride Bowl at Newark, N.J., on CSTV. One year later, NFL Films Presents was on hand to watch Navy hand Army a 31-15 setback at the Pride Bowl. Last season, the Mids rallied from a 16-0 halftime deficit to claim a 19-16, double-overtime victory over the Black Knights in West Point on ESPNU.

    Prior/Current Enlisted Men with Navy Sprint Football
    Fourteen men associated with this year's team have prior or currently enlisted with the United States Navy or United States Marine Corps. Two managers, Steven Sifuentes and Jeff Walker, received Purple Hearts for their service in the Marines in Iraq. During his second tour in Iraq, head coach Maj. Joseph R. Clearfield, USMC served with this year's sprint football officer representative, Maj. Ted Greeley, USMC.
