ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy will host the Big Red of Cornell on Saturday, Oct. 19 in its second-to-last home game of the season. The Midshipmen (4-0) and the Big Red (1-4) will kick off the contest at 12 p.m. at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

Navy will look to extend its current six-game winning streak versus Cornell on Saturday. Last season at Cornell, the teams battled to an 11-3 decision in favor of the visiting Mids.

Prior to the contest, the 16 members of Navy’s Class of 2014 will be honored in a brief Senior Day celebration. The class comes into Saturday’s game with 22 wins and one CSFL title.

Last Time Out

The Navy sprint football team earned a 42-27 victory over Post University on the road. After a quiet first half, the Mids picked up their pace and efficiency to pull away with 28 points over the final 25 minutes.

Corey Garcia (So., San Diego, Calif.), Eric Wellmon (So., Wallkill, N.Y.) and William Hampton (Jr., Charleston, S.C.) led the Mids’ offense with five combined touchdowns, including four in the second half. Garcia rushed for 131 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries, while his backfield-mate Wellmon had 10 rushes for 35 yards and two touchdowns. Hampton completed six passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns as the starting quarterback.

Defensively, senior Brendan West (Meridian, Idaho) and junior Jon Moyle (Tallahassee, Fla.) highlighted Navy’s effort. West made seven tackles from his defensive back position, while Moyle, a defensive lineman, made six stops, including three tackles for loss and two sacks.

As a team, Navy held Post’s potent running attack to 84 yards, well below the Eagles’ 156-yards per game average.

In recognition of his effort, Moyle was named the CSFL’s Defensive Player of the Week.

Moyle is the fourth Mid to earn weekly accolades from the league as David Williams (Sr., Roanoke, Va.) and Matt Piotrowicz (Sr., Sewell, N.J.) were named the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively on Oct. 2. Junior lineman Chris Mershon (Jr., Lee’s Summit, Mo.) was the team’s first honoree on Sept. 18 as the Defensive Player of the Week.

The Big Red (1-4, 1-4 CSFL)

After starting the year with four consecutive losses, the Big Red got in the win column with a dominant 50-19 win over Princeton last Friday, Oct. 11.

On the strength of 256 rushing yards, Cornell registered touchdowns in every quarter on its way to victory.

Benjamin Herrera lead the Big Red’s offensive attack with 166 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. Quarterback Brendan Miller aided his running back with a 14 of 20 day passing for 148 yards and three touchdowns.

Quoting the Coach

Coach Lake on this week’s matchup with Cornell …

“They’re coming off of a win last week so we’re sure their confidence level is way up. We have to start fast to make sure we can cut down that confidence. As we always say we’re going to play our game and not take anything for granted. We’re going to play hard for all four quarters.”
