ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy sprint football team lost a heartbreaker to Penn Friday night at Rip Miller Field, 28-27, in overtime.

The Midshipmen (2-2, 1-1) trailed 7-0 early in the first quarter when John Kernan connected with Jeff Bagnoli on 31-yard touchdown reception. The Mids responded with a one-yard touchdown run by Arnold Selvidge. The extra point failed and the Navy was down, 7-6.

Penn scored their next touchdown when Kernan hit Scott Moore. Down 14-6, Navy marched down the field and responded with a 15-yard touchdown strike from Steve Troy to Ben Wilson. The two-point conversion was good to tie the contest at 14.

Navy took its first lead of the game when Troy and Wilson hooked up again, this time from 23 yards out, giving Navy a 21-14 lead. An 18-yard touchdown run by Mark Gannon tied the game up at 21 with 3:07 left to play.

That was the score in overtime when Gannon scored the first touchdown of the extra session, to give the Quakers a 28-21 advantage. The Mids matched them with a touchdown run by Roger Callahan. However, the extra point attempt failed and the Mids lost, 28-27.
