Mershon Named CSFL Defensive Player of the Week for Second Time in 2013

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Collegiate Sprint Football League named Navy junior defensive lineman Christopher Mershon as the its Defensive Player of the Week in the sixth weekly award announcement of the season on Wednesday.
Mershon (Lee’s Summit, Mo.) led Navy’s defense to victory versus Cornell at home on Saturday. The junior constantly wrecked havoc in the opposition’s backfield throughout the game to the tune of 3.5 sacks for 26 yards lost. Overall, he made seven tackles versus the Big Red. Mershon also came up big on special teams as he recovered a fumbled punt attempt and returned the loose ball for the game’s first touchdown.
This is the second time that Mershon has been named the CSFL Defensive Player of the Week in his career.
On the year, Navy has garnered five CSFL weekly awards as a team. Mershon leads list of honored Midshipmen as he is a two-time recipient. He was also named the Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 18 for his play versus Franklin Pierce, while David Williams (Sr., Roanoke, Va.) and Matt Piotrowicz (Sr., Sewell, N.J.) were the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week on Oct. 2 following the Mansfield game, respectively. Most recently, junior Jon Moyle (Tallahassee, Fla.) was named the Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 16 for his play versus Post.
Navy (5-0) is slated to travel to West Point, N.Y. on Saturday, Oct. 26 and face off with the Black Knights of Army (6-0) at Shea Stadium. The matchup of the two undefeated clubs is set for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
