ANNAPOLIS, Md. -
The Collegiate Sprint Football League has tabbed Navy running back Alex Horton as its offensive player of the week and defensive back Stephen Meidus as the conference's defensive player of the week, it was announced on Wednesday.
Horton picked up the honor after rushing for a program-record five touchdowns in Navy's 48-7 rout over Mansfield last Friday. The sophomore had 26 carries for 120 yards
and his touchdowns came on runs of 3, 2, 12, 4 and 14 yards as the Mids remained unbeaten at 5-0. The previous program record for rushing TDs in a game was four, last accomplished by David Williams in 2011.
Horton, a native of Mt. Peasant, Mich., is averaging 5.1 yards per carry this season. The CSFL Offensive Player of the Week honor is the first of his career.
Meidus is the first Mid to be named CSFL Defensive Player of the Week this season. In the win over Mansfield, the senior picked off two passes, broke up another and had one tackle for loss. His first interception came on just the third play of the game as he stepped in front of a Ben Pepper pass and returned it 36 yards to set up Navy's first touchdown of the game. The native of West Leechburg, Pa., picked off another pass in the second quarter that also led to a Navy TD on the ensuing drive.
It is the first time Meidus has been named the CSFL Defensive Player of the Week.
Navy will look to remain undefeated this Friday when it faces Penn in Philadelphia, Pa.
