Engel Named CSFL Offensive Player of the Week
Oct. 31, 2006 ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy sprint football junior tailback Richard Engel (Medford, N.J.) earned CSFL Offensive Player-of-the-Week honors for his performance during Navy's 21-2 win over Penn last Friday. Engel posted career highs with his 26 carries and 169 yards rushing, while finding the endzone twice on the evening. The 169 rushing yards were the most by a Midshipmen running back since Matt Sobecki churned out 179 yards at Wesley on Sept. 23, 1997. The junior ran for a 36-yard touchdown on Navy's first offensive play from scrimmage and later scored from one yard out in the third quarter. The product of Medford, N.J., leads the CSFL with 491 yards this season on 81 carries (6.1 ypc) and seven touchdowns. His rushing total leads the league by 131 yards and is looking to become Navy's first running back since 1997 to top the CSFL in rushing yards. This week's honors represents the second time Engel has been distinguished by the league this season. He was first recognized by the CSFL for his 134-yard, two-touchdown performance in Navy's 31-21 win against Army in the Pride Bowl, where he earned game MVP honors. Navy will close out its 2006 campaign looking to defeat Army for the second time this season, hosting the Black Knights in the annual Star Game at Rip Miller Field on Friday night. Admission is free for the 7 p.m. kickoff and will be televised nationally on a tape-delayed basis by CSTV. Commentators Pete Medhurst and Scott Zolak will call the action that will air on Tuesday, Nov. 7, at 9 p.m. The Midshipmen have defeated Army twice during a season in three of the last-four years, and have come away victorious in each of the past-five meetings.
