Two Mids Earn CSFL Weekly Honors
Nov. 7, 2006 ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy senior defensive linemen Dave Novotney (Chesterton, Ind.) and Adam Birchenough (Homer, N.Y.) have been named CSFL Defensive and Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively, by the league office on Tuesday morning. The Midshipmen defeated Army, 17-6, to capture the N-Star for the third-straight year. The win also pushed the Mids winning streak over the Black Knights to six games, the largest stretch in program history. In his final collegiate game, Novotney led the Navy defense with a season-best 11 tackles, two of which came behind the line of scrimmage for a loss of five yards. His performance on Friday night pushed his career tackles total up to 151, more than 35 of which were in the backfield, after playing in all of Navy's 26 games. The three-time All-CSFL defensive lineman has earned the league's weekly accolades at least once during each of his four years. Birchenough made one of the biggest plays of the night against the Black Knights, as he blocked Army's PAT in the fourth quarter to maintain Navy's two-possession lead at 10-6. The senior also made a pair of tackles with the special teams unit on kickoff coverage. This marks the first time in Birchenough's career that he has been recognized by the CSFL with its weekly honors. The Midshipmen finished the 2006 season with a 5-1 overall, 3-1 in league play.
