Players Honored at 2011 Sprint Football Banquet

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Sophomore running back David Williams, Navy's record holder for rushing yards in a game (291) and season (1152), was selected as the team's MVP it was announced at the sprint football team banquet this week. Williams also took home offensive MVP honors as well as the Lt. Cmdr. Albert A. Shaufelberger, III Award, which is presented to the MVP of the N-Star game. Williams rushed for a school-record 291 yards in Navy's 28-6 title-clinching triumph over Army.

Another sophomore, linebacker Matt Piotrowicz, was selected as the team's defensive MVP. Piotrowicz, also a first-team All-Collegiate Sprint Football League honoree, led Navy in tackles with 50 (26 solo, 24 assists).

A trio of seniors on the defensive side of the ball in Vince DeBenedetti, Julian Jerzerick and captain Zzmarr Stone were also recognized for their efforts this season.

DeBenedetti, who had five pass break-ups and 23 tackles from his spot in the secondary, was voted the winner of the Jack Cloud Award, which is presented to the hardest working and motivated player.

Despite missing several games due to injury, Stone proved essential to the Mids' success as he was named the winner of the Sexton Leadership Award.

Jerzerick, a defensive end who ranked fourth on the team in tackles with 26, was selected as the winner of the Col. Sparky Renforth Lineman of the Year Award.

Senior running back Marty Meehan, who was recognized by the CSFL as its All-Purpose Player of the Year, was honored with the Special Forces Award, which goes to Navy's special teams player of the year.

Meehan also led Navy in touchdowns this season with nine.

Integral in the success of Navy's league-leading ground game all season was junior fullback D.J. Hooper, who earned the Unsung Hero Award. The blocking back finished the season with 205 yards on just 40 carries.

 

 

Sophomore defensive back Samuel Gedeon led Navy with two interceptions and earned the W.J. Gooding Award, which is presented to the team's most improved player.

The John S. Degnan Award for most outstanding freshman went to wide receiver Jesse Holian. Holian had 14 catches for 223 yards and three touchdowns.
