NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The 10th-ranked Navy squash team captured a 5-4 victory over 15th-ranked Bowdoin in the Hoehn Division of the 2001 NISRA Championship held Friday in New Haven, Conn. The Hoehn Division includes teams ranked ninth through 16 and include Amherst, Bates, Bowdoin, Brown, Dartmouth, Franklin & Marshall, Navy and Penn.

The Mids got their first win of the day with an Andy McCann (Coral Springs, Fla.) victory at the No. 2 flight. McCann, who has shuffled back and forth between No. 1 and 2 this season, posted a 3-1 win over Bowdoin captain Jamie Shea, 15-11, 15-11, 10-15, 15-13. Navy also captured victories at the No. 6 and 8 slots with team captain Clint Lawler (Thurmont, Md.) defeating George Hubbard, 3-1, at No. 6 and Stephen Huber (Lake Forest, Ill.) cruised past Andrew Holman, 3-0, at the eighth position. In the odd flights, Navy went 2-3, however, the Mids were able to clinch the match win in the deciding match at No. 5 played by senior Jamie Peace (Chestertown, Md.). Peace fought back from a 2-1 deficit and even warded off three match points against him to take the 3-2 match-winning victory over Tim Costin, 13-15, 15-10, 8-15, 15-10, 17-15.

"Jamie Peace played a great match today in helping us beat Bowdoin," said first-year head coach Craig Dawson. "He was down two games-to-one and held off three match points to win the match in a hard-fought match. On the other hand, David Haile (Hudson, Ohio), who played the No. 7 position for us, dropped a heartbreaking match, losing in five games."

Meanwhile, Matt Fisher (Clifton, Va.) defeated Matt Nowak at No. 9, 15-8, 15-6, 15-3.

The Mids return to action at the NISRA Championship Saturday at 12-Noon when they face Pennsylvania. The Quakers were upset by Navy on their home court last month, 6-3. Pennsylvania, meanwhile, moved on in the winners bracket by way of a 7-2 win over Amherst Friday morning.

"We are looking forward to playing Penn tomorrow in what will be an extremely competitive match," said Dawson.
