NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The 10th-ranked Navy squash team suffered an 8-1 loss to Pennsylvania in the Hoehn Division semifinals at the 2001 NISRA Championship held Saturday in New Haven, Conn. The Hoehn Division includes teams ranked ninth through 16 and include Amherst, Bates, Bowdoin, Brown, Dartmouth, Franklin & Marshall, Navy and Penn. Navy's 5-4 opening-round win over Bowdoin advanced the Mids to today's semifinal contest against Penn, who the Mids defeated earlier in the season by a slim 6-3 margin.
Navy's lone victory of the afternoon was at the No. 4 slot in which sophomore Edson Greenwood (Philadelphia, Pa.) handed Will Ruthrauff a 3-1, 5-15, 15-7, 15-12, 15-14 loss. Meanwhile, Navy lost 3-2 heartbreakers in four matches, including No. 7-9. Junior Stephen Huber (Lake Forest, Ill.) opened up his match at No. 8 with a 2-0 lead, but Matt Vergare regrouped to take the win 11-15, 12-15, 15-9, 17-15, 15-12. Meanwhile, sophomore David Haile (Hudson, Ohio) came back from an 0-1 deficit to go up 2-1 with wins in the second (15-10) and third (17-15) games, only to drop the match 3-2.
"We lost a tough one today," said Navy head coach Craig Dawson. "We lost four matches in five-game sets and David Haile and Jamie Peace played great matches."
Navy will play for 11th place Sunday in the final day of competition against Brown at 2 p.m.
