McCann rebounded from a one-game deficit to win the next three and claim a victory in the first round of competition against the 44th-ranked player in the country, Eric Hong. Hong, who is MIT's No. 1 player, fell to McCann, 8-15, 15-10, 15-10, 15-9. Meanwhile, McCann played a short time later in the second round, but was unable to unseat Williams' Max Monteglas. McCann fell to 1-1 in singles play at the championship with a 15-11, 15-12, 15-13 loss to the 37th-ranked Monteglas. "Andy began the tournament with a great performance against Hong," said Navy head coach Craig Dawson. "Though he lost 3-0 to Monteglas, it was a hard-fought match." McCann returns to action Saturday in the consolation bracket.
