CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Navy swimming and diving teams each stand in second place after Thursday's opening day of the Nike Cup Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The Navy women's team accrued 219.5 points to place second to North Carolina State's tally of 265 points and just in front of meet-host North Carolina's total of 218 points. Meanwhile, the Navy men's team scored 222.5 points on the day. North Carolina State also leads the men's meet after day one thanks to its 366.5 points. As on the women's side, the Navy men are just in front of the third-place Tar Heels who ended the first day scoring 219 points.

"The guys were able to place well this morning to give us the opportunity to score points at night," said Navy men's swimming head coach Bill Roberts. "A number of them then were able to drop the times they posted during the morning session this evening. I also am happy with the way we attacked the races today."

"We typically swim well at this meet," said Navy women's swimming head coach John Morrison, "but this was one of our better opening days down here. It was a good team performance for us today throughout the events. We received points from a lot of people. We are in a good position and hope to finish the rest of the meet out strong."

A trio of Mids finished in second place in their respective individual events Thursday. On the women's side, Laura Gorinski (Sr., Greensburg, Pa.) finished just in back of Old Dominion's Kimberly Rashleigh in the 200 individual medley. Rasheligh posted a winning time of 2:01.45 to better Gorinski's clocking of 2:03.11.

For the Navy men's team, Thomas Duvall (Fr., Durham, N.H.) placed second to North Carolina's Brett Nagle in the 500 freestyle. Nagle won the race in a time of 4:24.04, with Duvall finishing in second place with a time of 4:26.26. Additionally, Ben Bondurant (Sr., Atlanta, Ga.) took the silver to North Carolina's Matt Kwatyra's gold in the 200 individual medley final. Bondurant completed the race in a time of 1:50.70 to finish in back of Kwatyra's performance of 1:48.54.

The finals of 500 free and 200 individual medley races were productive events for both Navy teams as a combined 10 Mids advanced to the respective champion finals. Joining Dudley in the final of the women's 500 free for Navy were Ange Sawick (So., Abington, Pa.) in sixth pace and Morgan Nassif (Fr., Laguna Hills, Calif.) in seventh place, while Riley Mita (So., Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) finished in third place and Alex Nickell (Fr., Loveland, Colo.) touched the wall in fourth place in the men's 500 free final.

In the 200 individual medley finals, Kellie Darmody's (Sr., Charlotte, N.C.) eighth-place showing boosted Gorinski's effort, with Joseph Stark (Sr. Erie, Pa.) finishing in seventh place in the men's final of the event to support the second-place finish of Bondurant.

The lone additional individual event final on the day, the 50 freestyle, saw Toni Paruso (Sr., Savannah, Ga.) finish in fourth place for the Navy women and Robbie Parker (Sr., Vienna, Va.) place sixth for the Navy men.

A pair of relay events also were contested on the day. The Navy women's team finished in third place in the 200 freestyle and fourth place in the 400 medley relays. Conversely, the top finishing Navy men's squad in the two events placed fifth in the 200 free relay and fourth in the 400 medley relay.

The men's and women's platform diving events also were held Thursday. Navy's Wil Mayo (Jr., The Woodlands, Texas) scored 226.40 points to place sixth and Joe Esposito (So., Langhorne, Pa.) tallied 217.35 points to place eighth.
