Men’s Swimming Finishes Purdue Invite
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. –– The Navy men’s swimming team totaled 122 points at the three-day Purdue Invitational that concluded Saturday evening in West Lafayette, Ind. The Mids, who were the lone team competing without their divers, placed seventh in the field.
The event featured preliminary heats in the morning and four levels of finals in the evening.
“Overall, I was pleased with the opportunity to come here and race against this level of competition,” said Navy men’s swimming head coach Bill Roberts. “This has proven to be one of the faster invites held in the country this season. It was a terrific opportunity to race alongside and against this caliber of swimmers.”
Navy scored a healthy amount of its points in the relay events. The Mids placed fourth in the 400 freestyle relay, fifth in the 200 freestyle relay and sixth in both the 800 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay.
Individually, James Wilson (So., Ephrata, Pa.) was the only Navy swimmer to reach the B level final in multiple events. Wilson placed 16th in both the 100 fly (49.61) and 100 back events (50.09).
Joining Wilson in reaching the 100 fly B final was teammate Zach Piedt (Jr., Fort Mill, S.C.), who placed 15th (49.58). Navy also advanced two swimmers into the B final of the 200 fly. Micah Oh (Fr., Kent, Ohio) would finish in 12th place (1:50.00) in the event and Nick Pfanstiel (Jr., Fishers, Ind.) would place 14th (1:50.36).
“While I was pleased with how we raced,” said Roberts, “we certainly have things we need to work on. It was good to see that our guys were up for the challenge and didn’t back down from who we were up against.”
Navy will next be in action Dec. 7 when it plays host to Army West Point.
