Navy Swimmers and Diver Total Three League Laurels

Sean Murphy

Feb. 4, 2013

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- Members of the Navy swimming and diving teams combined to win a trio of weekly awards from the Patriot League on Monday. Sean Murphy (Jr., Hudson, Ohio) and Laura Gorinski (Sr., Greensburg, Pa.) were named as the league's swimmers of the week, while Ben Freedman (Jr., Kennewick, Wash.) was selected as the men's diver of the week.

Murphy swept the two breaststroke events during Navy's meet against Columbia. He won the 100-y breast by nearly one second with a time of 56.01 and the 200-y breast by 1.47 seconds with a clocking of 2:03.20. The wins were his first of the season in the 100 breast and third in the 200 breast. Murphy additionally posted the fastest breaststroke leg during the 200-y medley relay race.

Freedman won a close one-meter competition against the Lions and fell just short of winning the three-meter board on the day. He posted a score of 315.60 to win the one meter by 2.55 points and accrued 325.95 points to place second by 1.20 points on the three meter.

Freedman has won the one-meter board four times this season while placing either first or second seven times on the three meter.

Gorinski and the women's team took part in a pair of meets last week. The Mids first posted a win against Johns Hopkins before competing in the unscored Bison Invite. Gorinski was entered into just one individual event against the Blue Jays, but she made it a memorable one as her time of 2:19.90 in the 200-m individual medley gave her a 4.64-second victory and established a new school record in the event. Her clocking bettered the previous standard of 2:20.31 that Kelly Zahalka recorded in the fall of 2007.

Gorinski then went on to win the 100-y breaststroke in a time of 1:05.41 during the Bison Invite.

The Navy men's swimming and diving team will close out its regular season Wednesday by playing host to Johns Hopkins in Lejeune Hall starting at 6 p.m. Both Navy teams will then begin final training for the Feb. 21-23 Patriot League Championship that will be contested at Bucknell.
