Bradford Headlines League All-Academic Team for Swimming & Diving

Ellen Bradford

March 3, 2014

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- Navy's Ellen Bradford (So., Knoxville, Tenn.) was named as the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women's swimming and diving while three members of the Navy men's team garnered Patriot League All-Academic Team honors. The announcement of the respective teams were made Monday by the league office.

Initial nominees for either award must be at least sophomores in the classroom and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20.

A systems engineering major, Bradford has compiled a 4.00 GPA through her three completed semesters at Navy. In the pool, the two-time first-team all-league honoree won the 200 breaststroke while placing second in the 100 breast and fifth in the 200 individual medley at the 2014 Patriot League Championship. This effort came one year after she finished in second place in the 100 breast, fourth in the 200 breast and seventh in the 200 IM at the championship.

Bradford becomes the fifth Mid to have been tabbed as the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women's swimming and diving. She joins Heather Davies (1993 [co]), Allison Moon (2004), Kelly Zahalka (2007, `08, `09) and Laura Gorinski (2011, `12, `13) as recipients of the accolade.

Hugh Davison (Sr., Towson, Md.), Jonathan DeBaugh (So., Conroe, Texas) and Ben Freedman (Sr., Kennewick, Wash.) each were named to the Patriot League All-Academic Team for men's swimming and diving.

Davison, who also received the accolade one year ago, earned second-team all-league laurels in 2014. He placed fourth in the 100 free, sixth in the 50 free and seventh in the 200 free at this year's league meet, while also helping Navy win the 200, 400 and 800 freestyle relay crowns. Davison previously earned First-Team All-Patriot League honors in both 2012 and `13. The systems engineering major has posted a 3.48 GPA.

Debaugh has garnered first-team all-league honors in each of his two seasons. This year, he swept the two butterfly events at the league championship and swam on Navy's victorious 200 and 400 medley relay teams. He previously placed second in the 200 fly, fourth in the 100 fly and sixth in the 50 free at the 2013 league championship. Debaugh has posted a 3.29 GPA as an information technology major.

Like Bradford and Davison, Freedman is a systems engineering major at Navy. He carried a 3.60 GPA into his final term on The Yard and appeared on the league all-academic team as both a sophomore and junior. A recipient of second-team all-league honors in each of his final three seasons, Freedman placed third on both diving boards at the 2014 league championship. This is after placing second on the one meter at the 2012 and `13 league meets, third on the three meter in `12 and eighth on the board in `13. Freedman also advanced to the championship final in both events as a freshman. He would place sixth on the three meter and seventh on the one meter.
