ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Three members of the Navy diving program are among the over 90 entrants that will be competing at this weekend's NCAA Zone `A' Diving Championship at the University at Buffalo's Alumni Natatorium. The event runs Friday through Sunday and starts daily at Noon.
Friday's competition will feature the women's one-meter board and the men's three-meter event, with the reverse boards being contested on Saturday. Both the men and the women will compete in platform diving on Sunday.
Zone `A' will send four men and four women to the respective NCAA Championship meets.
Representing Navy this weekend will be Ben Freedman (So., Kennewick, Wash.), Wil Mayo (So., The Woodlands, Texas) and Courtney Vandament (Sr., Coppell, Texas). Freedman and Mayo with both compete on all three days of the meet, with Vandament only entered into the one and three-meter competitions.
"This is a very competitive zone," said Navy diving coach Joe Suriano, "made even more difficult by it being able to send only four qualifiers to the NCAA Championship. There will be a number of very good divers who will not make it out of our zone this weekend."
All three Navy divers had strong showings in helping their respective teams win Patriot League titles several weeks ago in Lejeune Hall. Freedman placed second on both boards, Mayo finished in third place on the three meter and in fifth place on the one meter, while Vandament won the three meter and placed second on the one meter to earn the league's diver-of-the-year honor.
