Navy Swimmer Bailey Garners NCAA Scholarship
ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– Recent Navy graduate Ryan Bailey (Youngstown, Ohio), who served as the captain of the 2016-17 men’s swimming team at the school, has been selected to receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. His accolade was recently announced by the NCAA along with all recipients of the scholarship who participate in winter sports.
The NCAA awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually. The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes across all NCAA levels of competition who excel academically and athletically and who are at least in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition.
The one-time non-renewable scholarships of $7,500 are awarded three times a year corresponding to each sport season (fall, winter and spring). There are 29 scholarships available for men and 29 scholarships available for women in each sports season for use in an accredited graduate program.
Bailey is the fourth Mid in the last two years and the 14th in the last eight years to earn an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
Earlier this month he garnered the second College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-America honor of his career. He earned a first-team nod this year after having received a third-team award in 2016. Bailey also was tabbed as the 2016-17 Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for his sport.
Bailey posted a 3.98 cumulative grade-point average at Navy as an operations research major, earning an A in all but one (B) of his classes during his four-year academic career. He graduated 10th on the Overall Order of Merit in Navy’s Class of 2017.
In the pool, Bailey earned all-league accolades in each of his final three seasons. He capped his career by garnering First-Team All-Patriot League honors as a senior after he won the 100 butterfly event at this year’s league championship. Bailey advanced to the championship final in an individual event at the league meet five times in his three years of competing at the championship and swam on Navy’s league title-winning 400 medley relay team in 2017.
