Swimming and Diving Teams to Open Seasons Saturday
Oct. 4, 2012
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy swimming and diving teams will open their respective 2012-13 seasons Saturday when the Midshipmen compete at Loyola against the host Greyhounds and George Mason. The meet in Baltimore begins at 11 a.m.
Navy capped the 2011-12 season by sweeping the two Patriot League crowns. It was the ninth title in as many years of competing at the meet for the men's squad, while the women's team won its second title in three years and its league-best 11th team championship. Each Navy team has been tabbed as the favorite in the respective pre-season poll.
The Navy men's team posted a pair of victories over the Greyounds (157-126) and the Patriots (162-124) one year ago. The Mids won 11 of the 16 events on the day, including both relay races.
Loyola would go on to place fourth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in 2012, while George Mason would finish in second place at the Colonial Athletic Association Championship.
"We look forward to racing and competing again," said men's swimming head coach Bill Roberts. "Also, each meets takes on greater significance with our ongoing pool renovation. We honestly have little idea where we are at when compared to previous seasons and are eager to see how we do."
The Navy women's team only faced Loyola last season and the Mids emerged from the meet with a 208-89 victory. Navy won 15 of the 16 events contested in the dual meet. Loyola placed third at the MAAC Championship last season, with George Mason placing seventh at the CAA Championship.

Last season, Kellie Darmody had an inspiring run ending with winning both the 100 and 200 backstroke events at the Patriot League Championship. Lauren Baguley, Olivia Kosaka, Alex Lundgren, Amand Thach and Maddie Macfarlane kept pace with Kellie and had several great swims. There is no doubt that Kellie will continue to pace and motivate this group to keep up. Both Zoe Macfarlane and Konnor Rist will be instant impact players in this event."
Lauren Baguley finished in third place in the 200 back and in fourth place in the 100 back at the 2012 ECAC Championship ... Laura Gorinski has proven to be the best breaststroker in league history. We will look for her leadership to drive the success of this group. Freshman Ellen Bradford is coming off an incredible 2012 high school season and will add speed to this group."

In her freshman year, Ange Sawick proved to be one a tough competitor throughout the entire season and ended her year by winning a pair of league championships. Now a junior, Katie Davidson ended her 2012 season with an incredible 30-second improvement and fourth-place finish in her 1650 freestyle. We anticipate this group to train and compete with the same zeal this season. Rachael Dudley, Morgan Nassif and Megan Reutzel will be great additions to our freestyle corps."

Bill Roberts on the Overall Outlook
"With the graduation of our Class of 2012, we begin the new season as a very young and moderately experienced team. It will be a very interesting season due to the coupling of our youth with the ongoing renovation of Lejeune Hall. We will find ourselves facing additional hurdles which are going to be a real test of what this team is made of this season. Everything from the lack of home competitions to varying training is going to have an effect on the team. It will take an impressive and collective effort by everyone directly involved with the program to maintain and hopefully surpass the standards of the program."

"Hugh Davison and Justin Vagts headline the 200 and 500 freestyle events, respectively. Both are coming off seasons which produced new best times. Each competed at the Olympic Trials this summer and should continue to progress and improve in 2012-13. Close behind is Riley Mita, who begins the season without the challenge of recovering from knee surgery as he had last year and should be able to make himself equally as competitive this season. Newcomers Tommy Duvall, Alex Nickell and Nathan Stinson will provide additional depth for Navy. Similar names will maintain event competitiveness in the 1000 and 1650 freestyle events with Vagts and Mita expected to be toward the top. Joe Suriano on the Divers
"Ben Freedman returns as our No. 1 male diver. This year he is bigger, stronger and has Olympic Trials experience. He could be a favorite for a Patriot League title. He is a talented diver on the one- and three-meter boards and the 10-meter platform. Wil Mayo will be pushing Ben for the No. 1 diver position on our team. He enters the water without a splash. He too performed well at the U.S. Olympic Trials this past summer. He is hard working and ever improving. D.J. Principato is a big, tall, strong diver who jumps to the sun. He needs more consistency with his hurdle and take-offs. D.J. will push his teammates to excellence. Joe Esposito is a very talented platform diver. He knows how to rip a entry, especially on platform. He is a fearless competitor who needs to get physically stronger for springboard. Frank Love is a very talented diver who won the Georgia State High School diving title. He dove for Cynthia Potter, who competed in the Olympics. He needs to complete a good three-meter list. Frank may become one of our top divers. He has great feet and will help our program this year. Alfred Garvey has the potential to become a fine Division I diver. He is a good jumper, good form who has not been in a big diving program before. David Silver is big, strong athlete who is just beginning to learn how to dive."
