Navy Men’s Swimming and Diving Holds Off UMBC, 132-110

The Navy men's swimming and diving team won the last three events of the afternoon to put the meet out of reach against UMBC for an 132-110 victory Saturday at Lejeune Hall. Overall, the Mids were paced by winning eight of the 13 contested events. Junior Terrance Fenningham (Philadelphia, Pa.) won two individual events, the 50m freestyle in 23.61 and 100 freestyle in 52.52, in addition to being the third leg on the winning 400 medley relay, which registered a time of 3:54.32. Other members of the relay team included Chris Speicher (Cape May, N.J.), Brian DeMell (Mentor, Ohio) and Matt James (Lititz, Pa.). DeMell picked up an individual win of his own in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:11.02. Navy's Marshall Boyd (Pittsburgh, Pa.) also had a strong performance in the 200 freestyle with a 1:53.42 finish, while being the anchor on the 400 freestyle relay team that notched a time of 3:33.48. Drew Warren (Topeka, Kan.), Mike Linn (Newhall, Calif.) and James rounded out the winning quartet. In the final two events of the meet, Casey Gon (Cheetowaga, N.Y.) recorded back-to-back wins in the one-meter diving and three-meter diving, with scores of 261.60 and 291.00, respectively. "We had some fine performances from Fenningham, Boyd and Gon today," said Navy head coach Lee Lawrence. "It's nice to get the season off to a 2-0 start."
