Men’s Tennis Opens Season with Sweep
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy men’s team (1-0) opened up the 2018 dual season with a 7-0 victory over St. Francis (Pa.) (0-1) on Saturday evening at the Tose Family Tennis Center.
“Romesh and Joshua came through with the pressure on during the deciding doubles set,” head coach Chris Garner said after the match. “In the singles, the big fellows, Zach and Greg, came out really strong to give the team a lot of momentum while Andrew Ton really picked up speed as his match progressed.”
The day began with the Midshipmen claiming the doubles point. The duo of Gabriel Pilones (Bradenton, Fla.) and Matthew Lee (San Diego, Calif.) started things off on a positive note, posting a 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles. The Red Flash knotted things with a 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles over Andrey Majkic (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Peter Lohrbach (Little Neck, N.Y.). In the deciding match of doubles, Joshua Martin (Foley, Ala.) and Romesh Kahatapitiya (Virginia Beach, Va.) notched a 6-3 win to put the Midshipmen ahead 1-0.
In singles action, Navy swept all six courts, including straight-set wins in five matches.
Zach Jennings (Snellville, Ga.) started singles action with a straight-set victory at court three, winning, 6-0, 6-1. Andrew Ton (Milpitas, Calif.) won, 6-2, 6-0, in the top singles spot to put Navy in front 3-0. Walker Sims (Memphis, Tenn.) scored the decisive point with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles, giving the Mids their first victory of the dual season.
Greg Durham (Melbourne Beach, Fla.) and Andrew Hicks (Haddon Heights, N.J.) finished back-to-back on courts four and six, respectively. Durham won 6-3, 6-2, while Hicks went 6-2, 7-5. Aries Wong (Bethesda, Md.) posted a three-set winner (7-6, 2-6, 10-1) at court two.
The Mids continue the weekend against St. Bonaventure Sunday at 9 a.m. and Saint Peter’s Sunday at 1 p.m. on the opening weekend of dual match play across the country for the sport.
