"In singles, we kept rolling right away with another fast start," said Officer. "Thomas Pecor did a nice job, as did Calvin Mark, who is hitting the ball as well as anyone right now. Tyler Tossavainen closed well for us in the No. 6 match for the win."
"After winning 4-3 against St. Joseph's last year and to take it 7-0 this year is a great sign," said Officer. "St. Joseph's came at us hard and made us battle."
In the afternoon session, Navy had a much easier time on their way to another 7-0 result as the Mids failed to drop a set in any of their matches to St. Francis Brooklyn.
Navy quickly netted the doubles point on the strength of a 6-0 win by the No. 3 team of Tossavainen and Jake Darrah (Fr., Cartersville, Ga.) and a 6-1 victory by the No. 2 pairing of Daniel and Mark.
Two 6-0, 6-0 straight set wins by Darrah at No. 6 and Gaines at No. 5 staked Navy out to a 3-0 match lead before Daniel, Tossavainen and Mark would finish their competitions in quick succession. "This afternoon was a good match for us," said Officer. "We got some extra guys into the action, so that was good to see. St. Francis challenged us throughout as every point was a hard point."
"Today's matches were definitely positive and we'll look forward to traveling to No. 1 Virginia tomorrow," said Officer.
The Mids will have a quick turnaround as they will be right back in action on Sunday, Jan. 26 with a matchup versus the top-ranked Virginia Cavaliers in Charlottesville, Va. The action is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
