ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's tennis team improved to 3-1 on the season as it picked up a pair of wins on Saturday in Annapolis at the Tose Family Tennis Center. Navy opened the day with a hard-fought 4-3 victory over St. Joseph's (Pa.), then followed that up with a 7-0 win over St. Francis (N.Y.).

Doubles play against St. Joe's started with Austin Jones and Alex Gaines at No. 2 easily putting away Tommy Gates and Dan Barrus, 8-2. Needing just one win to secure the doubles point, Navy's No. 1 and 3 teams gave up early leads and fell. Navy's No. 1 doubles team of Peter McDonald and Calvin Mark led Max Montague and Jose Sierra, but wound up falling, 9-8. Navy's No. 3 tandem of Nicholas Gutsche and Blake Daniel suffered the same fate after also being up early in their match against Jeff Kessler and Pierre Brondeau.

"We let the doubles point slip away," said Navy head coach John Officer. "We were up at both No. 1 and 3 doubles and we just didn't do a good job of finishing up those matches. But this team is made up of a lot of really good competitors, so they don't get fazed when they give up a doubles point."

The Midshipmen quickly put the doubles loss behind them as Calvin Mark made fast work of Sierra at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-1. Tyler Burnett followed with a similar result at No. 6 singles, defeating Barrus, 6-3, 6-2, to give Navy a 2-1 lead.

The Hawks then picked up a victory at No. 5 singles to tie the overall match score at two as Kessler downed Gutsche, 6-1, 7-5.

Daniel and Jones then broke the tie to give Navy the lead for good as they were victorious at No. 4 and No. 3 singles matches, respectively. Daniel dropped his first set to Montague, 6-3, but followed by winning the next two sets, 6-4, 6-1. After being down, 4-1, Jones won his first set in a tiebreak, 7-6 (2), and then the second, 6-3.

In the final singles match, Navy's McDonald fell to Gates in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7), 4-6, 10-3.

"We had a very disjointed week of practice," said Officer. "We had some guys injured that had to miss practice. This first match today showed us the importance of preparation."

Navy used the momentum from the end of its first match to put together a dominating performance against St. Francis (N.Y.). The Mids went undefeated, winning all 12 singles sets after sweeping doubles for a 7-0 victory.

Jones and Gaines played at No. 1 doubles against the Terriers and defeated, Ricardo Garcia and Francesc Terns-Campius, 8-2. Daniel and Gutsche also moved up a slot to the No. 2 pairing and won their match over Tita Mba and Martin Grunin, 8-4. Tyler Burnett and Matt Richmond saw their first action of the day at doubles and easily downed James Chung and Evan Vrsaliko, 8-1.

Richmond and Chung met again at the No. 6 singles slot where Richmond put together the first of two 6-0 Navy wins. Daniel, playing at No. 3 singles, also won, 6-0, 6-0, in his match against Garcia.

"Matt Richmond was really the player of the day. He played very well and hardly made any mistakes," said Officer.

Mark (No. 1), Jones (No. 2), and Burnett (No. 4) all made it a perfect 2-0 afternoon in singles play. Mark defeated Mba, 6-2, 6-2, Jones downed Terns-Campius, 6-3, 6-1, and Burnett bested Vrsaliko, 6-0, 6-3.

In his only singles match of the day, Gaines downed Grunin, 6-3, 6-2.

"We were very dominant throughout the second match today and we got an opportunity to play our seven and eight players in Matt and Alex," said Officer.

Navy will host East Carolina and Villanova next Saturday beginning at noon at the Tose Family Tennis Center.
