ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– The Navy men’s tennis team posted a 2-1 record on Friday to start a busy weekend for the team. The Mids (5-1) posted wins at the Tose Family Tennis Center against La Salle (0-2) and the University of the Sciences (0-1) by the identical score of 7-0 and lost a 6-1 decision at East Carolina (1-1).

Navy played a very tight match against ECU, with the doubles point being decided by a tiebreaker in the last of the three matches to be completed. The Pirates would win the point when their No. 3 team of Will Bissett and Wisse Jonker defeated Greg Durham (So., Melbourne Beach, Va.) and Peter Lohrbach (Fr., Little Neck, N.Y.) by the score of 7-4 in the breaker.

Andrew Ton (Fr., Milpitas, Calif.) would earn Navy’s point as he defeated Freddie McGheehan, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 1 singles. The Mids nearly scored a second point but ECU’s Ronny Georgi outlasted Matthew Lee (So., San Diego, Calif.), 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7), at No. 4 singles. Though the Pirates won each of the remaining four matches in straight sets, two of the sets were decided by the score of 7-5, two more were decided the score of 6-4 and two additional sets had the score of 6-3.

“Greg and Peter were right there,” said Navy head coach Chris Garner of the doubles matches. “Andrew played well throughout his singles match. Although we lost the remaining matches, we had opportunities to gain momentum in each of them.”

The Mids began their match against La Salle by losing just one game in winning the three doubles matches. Navy then won five of the six singles matches in straight sets to complete the victory. Navy would go on to win all but two games in winning the three doubles matches from the University of the Sciences, and lost just one set in the six singles matches against the Devils.

“Two good wins today,” said Navy associate head coach John Moreland. “Gabriel Pilones (So., Bradenton, Fla.) and Walker Sims (Sr., Memphis, Tenn.) stepped up with four wins each. Along with Cameron Kirkpatrick (Jr., Menlo Park, Calif.), they set the tone for the team.

“It’s nice to get the sweep in both matches. We played solid and really did a good job carrying the momentum throughout both matches.”

Navy will play a trio of matches again Saturday. The Mids will be home for matches at 10 a.m. against Howard and at 2 p.m. against St. Francis Brooklyn, with a 11 a.m. match against Winthrop that will be played at ECU also on the schedule.
