Navy Defeats Both Saint Joseph's and St. Francis (N.Y.) on Saturday
Jan. 30, 2010 ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's tennis team won its first-two home matches of the year in convincing fashion against Saint Joseph's and St. Francis (N.Y.) on Saturday in the Tose Family Tennis Center. The Midshipmen (2-2) defeated the Hawks (0-1), 6-1, before posting a 7-0 victory over the Terriers (0-1). "Everybody played very well today," stated Navy head coach John Officer. "We were able to use all 13 players among the two matches. We bounced back well after last weekend's performance at the VCU Invite." Navy began the day by winning all-three doubles contests against Saint Joseph's to claim the doubles point. Jeremy New (Jr./Glen Allen, Va.) and Zach Nicholson (So./Bowie, Md.) teamed up to defeat Alex Veronis and Tommy Gates in the No. 3 doubles contest, 8-4, before Nick Birger (Jr./Belleville, Ill.) and team captain Ramsey Lemaich (Sr./Danville, Calif.) defeated Michael Stauble and Matt Prusack, 8-3, in the No. 2 flight to earn the doubles point. Owen Bullard (Jr./Concord, N.C.) and Eddie Konrad (So./The Woodlands, Texas) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-5 victory over Peter Cognetti and Lucho Perez-Abreu at the No. 1 spot. The Midshipmen won each of the first-three completed singles matches, all in straight sets, to clinch the victory. New was the first one off the court with a 6-0, 6-4 showing against Prusack at No. 3 singles, followed by Nicholson's 6-3, 6-1 win in the No. 4 spot against Cognetti and Bullard's 6-4, 6-4 victory over Stauble at No. 1 singles. Matt Richmond (Fr./Kalamazoo, Mich.) also won in straight sets at the No. 6 match against Perez-Abreu, 6-2, 6-4, before Anderson Walls (Fr./Alpharetta, Ga.) rallied from an opening-set loss to defeat Veronis in three sets in the No. 2 contest, 4-6, 7-5, 10-8. In the second match of the day, the host Mids won all-three doubles matches and all-six singles contests to post a sweep of St. Francis (N.Y.). The No. 2 doubles combination of Birger and Lemaich won the their match over James Brennan Tsang and Daniel Gonzalez, 8-0, before Mike Eisenberg (Jr./St. Louis, Mo.) and Jarrad Smoke (Sr./Belmar, N.J.) captured the doubles point with an 8-2 victory over Martin Grunin and E. Alontanga in the No. 3 flight. Bullard and Konrad completed the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win over Danlahdi Robinson and Tita Mba in the No. 1 spot. Navy won each of the six singles matches in straight sets, highlighted by New's 6-0, 6-0 victory over Tsang in the No. 3 spot. Smoke delivered a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Alex Tokarz in the No. 5 match and Christian Mineur (Jr./Hudson, Ohio) won his contest in the No. 6 position, 6-2, 6-1, to clinch the team victory for the Mids. Bullard, Walls and Nicholas Gutsche (Fr./Sarasota, Fla.) rounded out the match with two-set victories in the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 spots, respectively. "Jeremy New was dominant in all of his matches today - both doubles and singles," said Officer. "He's playing with a lot of enthusiasm. He plays so hard on every single point and never quits. He has shown tremendous amount of improvement." The Midshipmen will return to action this Friday, Feb. 5, when they travel to College Park, Md., to take on Maryland at 3 p.m. Navy (1-2) def.
