ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy tennis team put together one of its best days of the young season Saturday by dropping just one match on the day in posting a 6-1 victory over St. Joseph's and a 5-0 win over George Mason at the Severn Valley Tennis & Fitness Club.

The victories improved Navy's record on the year to 5-3, while St. Joseph's fell to 3-3 and George Mason remained winless on the season through six matches.

Navy won each of the three doubles matches against the Hawks by identical scores of 8-6. Jason Hill (So., Atlanta, Gla.) and Nate Nelms (So., St. Mary's, Ga.) teamed for the win over Jarrett Chirico and Phil Bayliss at No. 1 doubles, Stanley Kahl (Sr., Rchland, Pa.) and Adrian Lai (Sr., Tucson, Ariz.) defeated A.J. Garabedian and Matt Glashgow at No. 2 doubles, and the team of Alex James (Jr., Visalia, Calif.) and Ramsey Lemaich (Fr., Danville, Calif.) held off Patrick Adams and Nick Tuxen at No. 3 doubles.

During the singles portion of the dual meet, Navy's Lai (No. 3), Lemaich (No. 4) and Kahl (No. 5) all won in straight sets, while Hill rallied after dropping the first set at No. 2 singles to Glasgow, 6-4, to win the next two sets, 6-1, 6-4, and the match.

At No. 1 singles, Nelms held off Chirico 6-4, 4-6, 10-6.

"Our match against St. Joseph's might have been our best match of the season," said Navy head coach John Officer. "We played very well against a very tough St. Joseph's team who is one of the favorites to win the Atlantic 10 title. This was an excellent win for us.

"Nate Nelms played very well in his match against Chirico. He lost to Jarrett this fall, but came back today with a great win."

The Mids also had another strong showing at the end of the day against the Patriots, winning each of the five contested matches in straight sets. Luke Albi (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) and Kyle Jones (Jr., Canton, Ohio) posted a victory at No. 1 doubles, with Nelms, Hill, Lai and Kahl all winning at Nos. 1 through 4 singles, respectively.

"Nate played very well again this evening, as did Jason," said Officer. "It was a very good day for us. We have been working very hard in practice and it is nice to see the hard work pay off. We also have received some excellent leadership this season from our seniors, Adrian and Stanley.

"I think this team has the makings of something special."

Navy will now take to the road for the next four weeks, with the first of eight-straight matches away from home slated for Feb. 24 at Brown.
