Men's Tennis Splits Doubleheader with Monmouth, Villanova

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's tennis team (15-5) split a doubleheader against Monmouth (2-8) and Villanova (4-3) on Saturday at the Tose Family Tennis Center inside the Brigade Sports Complex. The Midshipmen dropped a 4-2 decision to the Hawks before closing the day with a 4-0 victory over the Wildcats. 

Navy fell in the morning match, dropping a 4-2 decision to Monmouth.

"We had an excellent start in doubles to take a 1-0 lead but Monmouth did a great job of changing the complexion of the match within the first twenty minutes by taking four first sets handily," head coach Chris Garner said of the first match. "We made it close in a few of the second sets but Monmouth was too good today."

Against the Hawks, the Mids won the doubles point, claiming the No. 2 and No. 3 slots. Peter Lohrbach (Little Neck, N.Y.) and Romesh Kahatapitiya (Virginia Beach, Va.) teamed up in the No. 3 doubles position, notching a 6-2 victory over Sergio Martinez and Will Cooke Wharton. The tandem of Zach Jennings (Snellville, Ga.) and Gabriel Pilones (Bradenton, Fla.) posed a 6-3 victory over Ale Gomez Estrada and Srdjan Jakovljevic in the No. 2 position to clinch the doubles point. Andrew Ton (Milpitas, Calif.) and Aries Wong (Bethesda, Md.) led 4-3 at No. 1 doubles when the point was claimed.

In singles, Monmouth's Cooke Wharton claimed a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles against Kahatapitiya to knot the match at 1-1. At No. 2 singles, Jakovljevic notched a win over Jennings, 6-0, 6-4, to give the Hawks the lead. MU's Martinez defeated Lohrbach at No. 5 singles (6-2, 6-4). Trailing 3-1, Navy picked up a victory (6-4, 6-1) at No. 4 singles by Pilones to pull close, but the Hawks' Nicola Pipoli defeated Ton in straight sets (6-1, 7-6 (5)) to secure the victory.

The Midshipmen rebounded in the afternoon match, posting a 4-0 victory over Villanova.

"We had another great start in doubles to take a 1-0 lead," Garner stated of the match with Villanova. "We had a much better start in singles winning all six first sets but Villanova was up to the challenge fighting back to push four of the matches to three sets.

"Andrew Ton was stellar in closing out his match to give the team a 2-0 lead while Peter Lohrbach also was able to complete a straight set win to give the team a commanding 3-0 lead. All the remaining matches could have gone either way but it was Gabriel Pilones who finished it off with a very solid third set winning 6-2 to give the team their fourth point."

The Mids started strong in doubles against the Wildcats. The team of Jennings and Pilones posted a 6-1 victory over William Elmore and Tommy Mulfur in the No. 1 spot. Joshua Martin (Foley, Ala.) and Kahatapitiya edged Mike Czlonka and Stefan Suarez, 6-4, at No. 3 doubles to secure the point. Greg Durham (Melbourne Beach, Fla.) and Lohrbach completed the doubles sweep with a 7-6 (5) win at the No. 2 slot over Thomas Dodson and Tyler Roth.

In singles play, Ton defeated Suarez in straight sets, putting Navy up 2-0 with the No. 1 singles win. Lohrbach followed with a 7-6 (4), 6-2 straight-set victory over Matt Phelps at No. 6. With four matches in the third set, Pilones closed things out with a win at No. 5 singles over Alastair Hurry. Pilones won 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 to give Navy thd 4-0 win.

When the match ended, Durham was tied with Roth in the third set (6-2, 3-6, 4-4), while Wong led Nova's Dylan Flanagan, 6-2, 5-7, 4-1. Walker Sims (Memphis, Tenn.) was tied with Dodson, 6-4, 5-7, but did not begin play in the third set when the match ended.

Navy returns to action on Saturday, March 3, as the Midshipmen host Fairleigh Dickinson at the Tose Family Tennis Center inside the Brigade Sports Complex.
