Navy Holds Off Bucknell in Men's Tennis
March 29, 2014
LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Victories in a pair of matches involving set tiebreakers boosted the Navy men's tennis team to a 5-2 win over Bucknell Saturday afternoon at the West Branch Tennis Cub in Williamsport, Pa.
"It was a typical Navy and Bucknell tennis match," said Navy associate head coach John Moreland. "The match went right down to the end. Bucknell played really well today. They also had a great and vocal crowd encouraging them along. We were fortunate to have just enough to record the win."
The match began with Navy (14-6, 1-0 Patriot League) and Bucknell (2-10, 1-1) splitting the first two doubles matches to be completed. The Mids posted an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles before Bucknell won an 8-6 decision at No. 3 doubles. That left the match at the No. 1 flight between Navy's team of Austin Jones (So., Dallas, Texas) and Thomas Pecor (Fr., Houston, Texas) and Bucknell's tandem of Nick Bybel and Aidan Lynch to decide matters. The teams were tied at eight games apiece, which resulted in a tiebreaker being used to award the doubles point.
The Mids quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the breaker, only to see the Bison notch the ensuing two points. Navy would score the next four points to close out the match and give the Mids a 1-0 advantage.
"Doubles were a battle the whole way in each of the three matches," said Moreland. "We really had to fight to earn the point."
That cushion soon became 3-0 as Calvin Mark (Jr., Union City, Calif.) posted a 6-2, 6-0 win over Lynch at No. 2 singles and Blake Daniel (Jr., Overlnd Park, Kan.) did not lose a game in defeating Bryan Adams at No. 3 singles.
Not long after Daniel's match was completed, a power outage at the facility caused the teams to hold the matches for over 20 minutes before resuming them without the aid of an additional warm-up period.
Bucknell would tally the next two points to close to within 3-2 of Navy as Octavio Canibe defeated Pecor, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 4 singles and Bybel defeated Jones, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 1 singles.
Alex Gaines (So., Wilmington, N.C.) fought through the power outage to build a 6-0, 4-1 lead over Jon DeFrancesch at No. 6 singles, putting the Mids on the verge of earning their fourth and match-clinching team point of the day. However, DeFrancesch won the next three games to tie the frame at 4-4.
"Alex did a great job of building a lead," said Moreland. "Then DeFrancesch won a couple of games and Alex had to fight against both his opponent and the crowd that climbed right back into things as DeFrancesch did."
Gaines would bounce back by winning the next two games to finish off the match.
In the remaining match, Krishna Jana (Fr., Seabrook, Texas) found himself trailing Kyle Rosen, 5-4, in the first set of their No. 5 singles match when the power outage occurred. Jana regrouped after the stoppage in play to force a first-set tiebreaker, which he would win by the count of 7-3. He then won the second set by the score of 6-4 to end play for the day.
"This was a tough win for us," said Moreland. "We had some really solid play that gave us the victory. It was a good start to the league season."
Navy will continue its league season Sunday when the Mids play at Colgate in a noon match in Hamilton, N.Y.
