ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team swept the doubles point, but Richmond rallied by winning four-of-six singles matches to hand the Midshipmen a 4-3 setback on Saturday afternoon.

The loss drops Navy's record to 14-9 overall.

"It was just a great match today. There is a lot of tradition between the two teams, dating back to our first year here at the Academy," said Navy head coach John Officer. "It was excellent tennis and we just got outplayed a bit. We fought very, very hard and fought the way we needed to today. We just came up a bit short."

Navy dominated doubles action, holding the Spiders to just 14 games as the Midshipmen won all three matches. Calvin Mark (So. / Union City, Calif.) and Peter McDonald (So. / Chapel Hill, N.C.) cruised at No. 1 doubles for an 8-3 victory and moments later, the Midshipmen wrapped up the doubles point at No. 2 with an 8-4 victory by Blake Daniel (So. / Overland Park, Kan.) and Nicholas Gutsche (Sr. / Sarasota, Fla.).

For good measure, the Mids completed the doubles sweep at No. 3 in an 8-7 (9) win by Alex Gaines (Fr. / Wilmington, N.C.) and Alex Sisk (So. / Clarksville, Ind.).

"All three doubles were very solid. We returned serve very well, and really played well in doubles play," said Officer.

Navy would take a 2-0 match lead when Daniel earned a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles. Daniel improved his record to 19-6 overall and 15-5 during dual-meet play, both team-best marks.

Richmond would win the next three completed matches to take a 3-2 match lead, but the Midshipmen countered with a 7-6 (4), 6-4 win at No. 2 singles by Peter McDonald, who ran his record to 13-9 overall and 12-7 in dual action.

The Mids' Calvin Mark then fell at No. 1 singles to Ethan Dunbar by a 0-6, 6-3, 7-5 tally. Mark led 5-2 in the third set, but lost the last five games to Dunbar.

"It's unusual for Calvin to let his match get away. He is a very mentally-tough player, so a lot of credit goes to Dunbar of Richmond," said Officer. "McDonald also had a nice comeback being down 5-2 in the first set to win in straight sets and Blake Daniel played very, very well today. We are really looking forward to next Sunday at Army."

The Mids will travel to West Point to face Army next Sunday at 3:00 PM.
