Lehigh Defeats Navy in Men's Tennis
April 13, 2013
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Strong singles play allowed Lehigh to bounce back after losing the doubles point to defeat the Navy men's tennis team, 5-2, Saturday at the Ulrich Varsity Courts in Bethlehem, Pa.
The Mids (15-11, 3-2 Patriot League) started the day by winning the doubles point from the Mountain Hawks (15-4, 4-1). The teams split the first two matches to be completed before Blake Daniel (So., Overland Park, Kan.) and Nicholas Gutsche (Sr., Sarasota, Fla.) defeated Jeremy Kochman and Matt Savran in a tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles. Navy's duo had six match points before finally winning the tiebreaker by the score of 9-7 and thereby securing the point for the Mids.
"Calvin Mark (So., Union City, Calif.) and Peter McDonald (So., Chapel Hill, N.C.) played extremely well in winning at No. 1 doubles (8-1)," said Navy head coach John Officer. "It was a struggle at No. 2 doubles, but we were finally able to close it out.
"We had all of the momentum going after doubles, but then we came out flat in singles. Lehigh completely outplayed us. Calvin played well in winning his match, but it was not a good performance for us."
Mark picked up then lone win for the Mids in singles as he won a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Mark Goldberg at the No. 1 flight.
Lehigh would not drop a set -- though two sets were extended into tiebreakers -- in winning the remaining five singles matches.
Navy's next match will be Friday in the quarterfinal round of the Patriot League Tournament in Hamilton, N.Y. Navy's opponent and the complete pairings for the three-day event will be announced early in the week.
"We've got to get ourselves going for the league championship next week," said Officer, who has guided Navy to five of the last six Patriot League titles. "We've got to realize that in this program we have a lot of pride and we've got to bring that pride with us into the championship. We are going to be the No. 3 seed, so we've got our work cut out for us."
