Men’s Tennis Wins Star Match on the Road
WEST POINT, N.Y. –– The Navy men’s tennis team posted a 4-1 victory over Army West Point Saturday afternoon in the Star Match between the two teams at the Malek Tennis Center in West Point, N.Y. The Mids (20-17, 4-1 Patriot League) have now won back-to-back Star Matches over the Black Knights (18-9, 6-1) for the first time since they won four in a row from 2006-09.
A win by the Mids in Saturday’s Army-Navy men’s lacrosse game secured the overall victory in the 2016-17 Star Series presented by USAA for Navy. The Mids hold a 13-9 lead in Star events with just baseball to be decided.
“Incredible atmosphere during today’s match,” said Navy head coach Chris Garner. “You could really see how much this match means to the players from both teams. The match went back-and-forth as both teams took turns holding leads. We’re pleased that when the dust settled we had been able to come away with the win.”
The Mids began the match by earning the doubles point, which has proven to be a strong indicator of the outcome for the overall match. Entering today, the team winning the doubles point has posted a 28-6 record in the last 34 dual matches between the programs.
Navy’s No. 3 team of Krishna Jana (Sr., Seabrook, Texas) and Aries Wong (Jr., Bethesda, Md.) won the first match to finish, a 6-2 decision at the No. 3 flight over Myles Conlin and Nikita Pereverzin. Army evened the results at one match each with a 6-3 victory at the No. 1 flight by Michael Nguyen and Grant Riechmann over Greg Durham (Fr., Melbourne Beach, Fla.) and Thomas Pecor (Sr., Houston, Texas). The Mids secured the doubles point on a 6-3 win by Zach Jennings (Fr., Snellville, Ga.) and Greg Pilones (Fr., Bradenton, Fla.) over Sam Lampmann and Gregory Shannon at No. 2 doubles.
The Black Knights tied the match at 1-1 as Nguyen defeated Pecor, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1 singles. The Mids regained the lead thanks to Jennings defeating Conlin, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 5 singles. The Navy lead increased to 3-1 after Matthew Lee (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) defeated Pereverzin, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 6 singles. Pilones clinched the match for the Mids when he posted a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory over David Mitchell at the No. 4 flight.
“Gabe was down in his match,” said Garner, “but was able to dig deep to give himself a chance to come back.”
In the remaining two matches that were stopped after the Pilones-Mitchell match ended, Wong held a 3-0 lead over Lampmann in the third set at No. 2 singles and Riechmann held a 5-2 lead over Durham in the third set of their match at the No. 3 singles flight.
Both teams will now travel to Annapolis for the Patriot League Tournament. The event runs Thursday through Sunday at the USNA. Seedings and the bracket for the nine-team tournament will be announced Tuesday.
