SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Lehigh won the school's first Patriot League Tournament title in men's tennis by posting a 4-0 victory over Navy Sunday afternoon at the Drumlins Country Club in Syracuse, N.Y.
The second-seeded Mountain Hawks, who were making their second appearance in the championship match of the tournament in a three-year span, advance to the NCAA Tournament with an 18-5 record. Navy, which was attempting to win its sixth crown in a span of seven years, sees its season come to an end with a 17-12 record. The Mids entered this year's edition of the tournament as the No. 4 seed.
Lehigh had recorded a 5-2 win over Navy last weekend.
"It was a very disappointing day to get all of the way to the finals and come up short the way we did," said Navy head coach John Officer. "We came out without the kind of intensity we really needed. Give all of the credit to Lehigh. They have been a very good team all year and they proved it again today. They just outplayed us."
The two teams split the first two doubles matches to be completed. Lehigh's team of Mark Goldberg and Mitchell Petersen edged Calvin Mark (So., Union City, Calif.) and Peter McDonald (So., Chapel Hill, N.C.) in a No. 1 doubles match that was extended into a tiebreaker. Goldberg and Petersen would win the tiebreaker by the score of 7-5.
Navy bounced right back and picked up the win at No. 2 doubles to even the results at one win apiece. Blake Daniel (So., Overland Park, Kan.) and Nicholas Gutsche (Sr., Sarasota, Fla.) defeated Jeremy Kochman and Matthew Savran by the count of 8-5 at the flight.
That left the No. 3 match between Navy's Alex Gaines
(Fr., Wilmington, N.C.) and Austin Jones
(Fr., Dallas, Texas) and Lehigh's Ben Gilman and Andrew Krentz to determine the all-important point. Lehigh's tandem would earn the point for the Mountain Hawks with an 8-6 victory.
"We had chances to win the doubles," said Officer, "which was disappointing."
Lehigh made the score 2-0 when Goldberg defeated Mark, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 1 singles, then built a 3-0 advantage after Timur Chernykh posted a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) win over Gaines at No. 6 singles. The Mountain Hawks clinched their first title when Gilman tallied a 6-4, 7-5 win over McDonald at No. 2 singles.
Gutsche was on the verge of picking up a point when play was stopped as he held a 6-1, 5-3 lead over Krentz at No. 5 singles. Jones also held a 7-6 (7-2), 0-3 lead over Petersen at No. 3 singles, while Savran held a 3-6, 6-4, 2-0 lead over Daniel at No. 4 singles.
