Men's Tennis Has Strong Day

Tyler Burnett

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Strong performances throughout the lineup allowed the Navy men's tennis team to win all but one of the 12 matches it played against St. Bonaventure Saturday morning at the USNA Tennis Courts in Annapolis. Saturday's result came one day after the Mids opened their 2012 fall season by winning five of nine matches against Delaware.

"We played much better today," said Navy head Coach John Officer. "I am very pleased with our all-around play. Our feet were under us more than they were Friday. We displayed better match toughness and improved at closing out matches. Everyone really played well. I can't pick out one guy as our player of the day."

Navy's freshman No. 2 doubles tandem of Alex Gaines (Wilmington, N.C.) and Austin Jones (Dallas, Texas) won an 8-3 decision over Gabriel Cardenas and Elliot Fanshell. At No. 3 doubles, Navy's Blake Daniel (So., Overland Park, Kan.) and Nicholas Gutsche (Sr., Sarasota, Fla.) posted an 8-4 win in their match against Javier Ortiz and Celso de vera Rehberger. Rounding out Navy's doubles wins was its No. 4 team of Tyler Burnett (So., Fayetteville, Ga.) and Matt Richmond (Sr., Kalamazoo, Mich.) as it defeated Mihai Ene and Trevor Haskell by the score of 8-1.

The Mids then dropped just one set in winning all eight singles matches. Calvin Mark (So., Union City, Calif.) won the first set of his No. 1 singles match against Fanshell by the score of 6-2, lost the second by the count of 6-4, then regrouped to win the third-set, 10-point tiebreaker (used in place of a complete third set), 10-6. The top half of Navy's lineup also saw Jones win a 6-4, 6-1 match against Oscar Yanez at No. 2 singles, Peter McDonald (So., Chapel Hill, N.C.) defeating Luis Guevara at No. 3 singles by the score of 6-3, 6-3, and Daniel tallying a 6-1, 6-4 win over Ortiz at No. 4 singles.

The bottom half of Navy's lineup combined to win 49 games while losing just 15 games. Gutsche posted a 6-3, 6-2 win over Cardenas at No. 5 singles, Gaines defeated de vera Rehberger, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 6 singles, Burnett did not drop a game in defeating Haskell at No. 7 singles and Richmond won a 6-2, 7-5 match against Ene at No. 8 singles.

Navy will close out play in the Navy Blue Invitational by facing Temple Sunday at 2 p.m. at the USNA Tennis Courts.
