Strong Opening Day for Men's Tennis Team
Sept. 9, 2011
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's tennis team posted wins in nine of its 10 matches contested against St. Bonaventure Friday as part of the Navy Blue Invitational held at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis, Md. Included on the day were six straight-set singles wins by the Midshipmen.
"We played with a pretty young lineup that consisted of four freshmen," said Navy head coach John Officer. "But they played well."
The lone loss suffered on the day by the Mids took place at No. 1 doubles where St. Bonaventure's Luis Guevara and Elliot Fanshell combined for an 8-4 win over Marcus Rebersak (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Anderson Walls (Jr., Alpharetta, Ga.). Navy's freshman tandem of Calvin Mack (Union City, Calif.) and Peter McDonald (Chapel Hill, N.C.) recorded an 8-2 win over Miguel Suarez and Oscar Yanez at No. 2 doubles, while Blake Daniel (Fr., Overland Park, Kan.) teamed up with Nicholas Gutsche (Jr., Sarasota, Fla.) for an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles against Trevor Haskell and Javier Ortiz.
"We were okay, but not great in doubles," said Officer. "We really just got through them."
The Mids played very well in winning all but one set in the seven singles matches. The top half of the lineup saw Rebersak defeat Fanshell, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 1 singles, McDonald win a 6-3, 6-1, decision over Yanez at No. 2 singles and Mark post a 7-5, 7-5, win over Guevara at No. 3 singles. Meanwhile, the lower half of the lineup included Daniel winning a 6-0, 6-1, match against Ortiz at No. 5, Gutsche posting a 6-1, 6-4, victory against Haskell at No. 6 and Matt Richmond (Jr., Kalamazoo, Mich.) not losing a game in defeating Mahai Ene at No. 7 singles.
The lone match to go three sets took place at No. 4 singles. Navy's Tyler Burnett (Fr., Fayetteville, Ga.) won the first set of his match against Suarez by the score of 6-4, then Suarez evened the match at one set apiece by defeating Burnett in the second set by the identical score. The two players used a 10-point tiebreaker to decide the match instead of a complete third set. Burnett would post a 10-6 win to close out the day.
"Our first set in singles were very good," said Officer. "We really took it to them. However, we had some letdowns in the second set."
Saturday's schedule for the invite has the Mids facing Binghamton at 9 a.m. and St. Bonaventure taking on Temple at 2 p.m.
"We cannot afford any letdowns against Binghamton," said Officer. "They have been ranked among the top-50 teams in the country in each of the last three years, and they are deserving of that ranking. We will need to be hitting on all cylinders."
Weather permitting, the matches will be played outdoors at the U.S. Naval Academy. Should conditions force the matches indoors, they will again be contested at the Tose Family Tennis Center.
