ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Austin Jones (Fr., Dallas, Texas) posted a pair of wins to highlight the efforts of the Navy men's tennis team against Temple Sunday on the final day of the Navy Blue Invitational that was held at the USNA Tennis Courts in Annapolis.
Jones began the day by teaming with classmate Alex Gaines (Fr., Wilmington, N.C.) for an 8-3 win over Hicham Belkssir and Kristian Marquart at No. 2 doubles. He then rallied to win a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9) decision against Marquart at No. 2 singles.
Additional winners on the day for Navy were Blake Daniel (So., Overland Park, Kan.), who posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over Belkssir at No. 4 singles, and Nicholas Gutsche (Sr., Sarasota, Fla.), who recorded a 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) victory over Hernan Vasconez at No. 5 singles.
"I was pleased with today," said Navy head coach John Officer. "Temple is a very good team that defeated George Washington, a team we lost to by the score of 6-1, last spring. We are pleased to come away with the majority of the wins against them.
"Austin did a great job to come back after losing a tough first set and then being down in the tiebreaker, and both Blake and Nick were stellar today and on the weekend."
Both Daniel and Gutsche won their respective singles flights with identical 3-0 records. Other Mids to win their singles flights were Gaines at No. 6, Tyler Burnett (So., Fayetteville, Ga.) at No. 7 and Matt Richmond (Sr., Kalamazoo, Mich.) at No. 8. Navy's No. 1 singles player, Calvin Mark (So., Union City, Calif.), finished in a three-way tie for the title at his flight, but Delaware's Troy Beneck was determined to be the flight champion due to his winning the most sets in round-robin matches between Beneck, Mark and Temple's Kacper Rams.
Navy's No. 3 doubles tandem of Daniel and Gutsche won its flight as did the No. 4 duo of Burnett and Richmond.
"We had a couple of all-league performers from last year who did not have as good of a weekend as they would have liked," said Officer, "but that's okay; they were able to get some matches in. We all competed hard and reached our objective which was to win the majority of our matches each day."
Navy's fall season will continue next weekend when the Mids take part in the East Carolina Invitational.
