Men's Tennis Wins Three Matches vs. Indiana
Sept. 28, 2013
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Austin Jones (So., Dallas, Texas) and Thomas Pecor (Fr., Houston, Texas) combined to post three victories for the Navy men's tennis team against Indiana Saturday morning at the USNA Tennis Courts in Annapolis.
Jones and Pecor initially combined to record an 8-6 win over the team of Daniel Bednarczyk and Chris Essick at No. 1 doubles. Each of the Mids would then tally three-set wins in singles play. Pecor rallied after dropping the first set to Bednarczyk, 7-5, to win sets two and three by scores of 6-4 and 6-3, respectively, at No. 1 singles. Jones also lost the first set of his match at No. 2 singles to Essick. Essick edged Jones by the score of 9-7 in a first-set tiebreaker, but Jones won the second set and third sets by the identical score of 6-3.
"Austin is a combined 10-3 this fall," said Navy head coach John Officer. "He is having a great fall. He is doing everything well. Thomas stepped up after losing the first set. He just played extremely well. He mixed up his serve really well and his returns were very powerful."
Navy also had several other opportunities for wins in the remaining three doubles matches. The Hoosiers, who were ranked 56th nationally at the end of the 2013 spring season, defeated the Mids by scores of 8-5 at each of the three flights. Additionally on the day, Tyler Tossavainen (Fr., Fleming Island, Fla.) lost a three-set match to George Rivers, 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, at No. 7 singles.
"I'm pleased with how we battled," said Officer. "We really, really fought hard. We are not backing down; we are coming after it and that is all I can ask. As long as we are coming after it and we play with confidence, that's all I can ask of these guys.
"We have a couple of guys who are not at their peak right now, but when they get going we are going to be very solid."
The Mids will finish up play at the Navy National All-Conference Invitational Sunday when they face Princeton in a 2 p.m. match. Navy began the invite Friday by facing players from a team combined of Arkansas and Penn State.
"This is a fantastic tournament for us," said Officer. "Everybody is good and if you are going to get wins you have to play well and be on your game. That's what you want this time of year."
