Navy Men's Tennis Wins Two Matches vs. UMBC
Oct. 6, 2012
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team won one doubles match and one singles match against UMBC in Saturday's action of the Navy Gold Invitational.
"It was a tough return to action today. This was our first matches in just under a month and you have to give UMBC credit. They battled hard and didn't give us the chance to get any momentum. It`s always a battle when we face them and today was no different," said Navy assistant coach John Moreland. "The matches were close with five tie-break sets and our senior captain Nicholas Gutsche did well to win a very close third set tiebreaker to win his match.
"We have to rebound and get ready for tomorrow's matches against a tough George Mason squad," added Moreland. "We will need to execute better if we are to reverse the outcome in tomorrow's matches."
The Mids' lone singles win came from Nicholas Gutsche in a 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (11-9) win over Alexandre Drean. Mark lost his match in three sets to Justin Carter, while Navy's four other setbacks came in straight sets.
Navy will face George Mason on Sunday at 9:00 AM at the US Naval Academy tennis courts.
