Mids Finish Play at Men's Tennis Regional
Oct. 19, 2013
BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Navy's Austin Jones (So., Dallas, Texas) and Thomas Pecor (Fr., Houston, Texas) both won a singles match and combined to win a doubles match this week at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Atlantic Regional Championship that is being held in Blacksburg, Va. A total of four Mids made the trip to the event that began Thursday on the Virginia Tech campus.
Blake Daniel (Jr., Overland Park, Kan.) was the first Mid to take to the courts as he won a pair of qualifying draw matches to advance into the main singles draw. Daniel rallied after dropping the first set to defeat Miljan Ruzic of James Madison, 3-6, 6-0, 6-1, before posting a 6-2, 7-5 win over Temple's Hicham Belkssir.
"Blake did a nice job in winning his two matches," said Navy head coach John Officer of Daniel's qualifying draw wins. "He came back really strong after losing the first set of his first match to really dominate the last two sets."
He would drop the first match in the main draw to Jimmy Davis of George Mason by scores of 6-1, 6-3.
Calvin Mark (Jr., Union City, Calif.) also lost his opening round match in the main draw as he fell, 6-1, 6-1, to Dante Terenzio of Old Dominion.
Both Pecor and Jones would post wins in the first round of the singles draw. Jones tallied a 7-5, 6-1 win over Max Brauth of James Madison, while Pecor recorded a 6-4, 6-0 win over Octavio Canibe of Bucknell.
The Navy duo would see their respective tournaments end in the second round with three-set losses to seeded players. No. 2 seed -- and the 43rd-ranked player in the country -- Amerigo Contini of Virginia Tech defeated Jones by scores of 3-6, 6-0, 6-0, with Penn State's Matt Barry, who was among the Nos. 17-32 seeds in the event, tallied a 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 win over Pecor.
"We had two tough second round singles matches," said Officer. "Thomas was down 5-2 in the first set before forcing a tiebreaker and winning the set, then was down 6-2 before coming back to tie the score at 6-6. The score in the third set was tied at four all when Barry held and then broke Thomas.
"Austin was fantastic in the first set of his match, then Contini was just too strong in the second and third sets."
In doubles, while the tandem of Daniel and Mark lost an 8-2 decision to Radford's Joe Mills and Javier Wasse in the first round, Jones and Pecor notched an 8-2 victory over Penn State's team of David Kohan and Chris Young. That sent Jones and Pecor, who were among the Nos. 9-16 seeds, into a second round match against Alex Aleman and Pete Carpenter from Duquesne. The Duquense team would post an 8-4 win over the Mids.
"Austin and Thomas had a good match against Kohan and Young," said Officer. "They were very aggressive and returned serves very well."
This tournament ended Navy's fall season. The Mids will open the championship portion of their season Jan. 18 when they play host to BYU.
"We've been working on some new information for about the last two weeks and we have been doing pretty good with our progress with it," said Officer. "We have about two and a half months until we open up against BYU, so our goal is to work pretty hard out of season with this new information and get us ready for our opener."
