Mids Finish Play at Dick Vitale Tennis Classic
SARASOTA, Fla. –– Navy’s Greg Durham (So., Melbourne Beach, Fla.) and Andrew Ton (Fr., Milpitas, Calif.) finished play at the Lakewood Ranch Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic held this weekend in Sarasota, Fla.
“It was a great event for Greg and Andrew to compete in,” said Navy head coach Chris Garner. “Playing in a tournament of this caliber can help both players see how they can compete at this level and what they can keep adding to their games to win at this level.”
The duo lost a close first round doubles match to the Florida Gulf Coast tandem of Oliver Landert and Mateo Ruiz as the Mids lost in a tiebreaker.
Durham dropped a first-round singles decision to Nicolas Rouanet from Louisville, 6-1, 6-2, then fell to Ben Tso from Princeton, 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) in the first round of the consolation draw.
Ton lost a three-set match to Michigan’s Davis Crocker, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, in the main singles draw, then notched a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Auburn’s Diego Chavarria in the first round of the consolation bracket. He would advance to the second round where he lost a 6-2, 6-1 contest to Louisville’s Federico Gomez.
“Their doubles match was decided by a point or two,” said Garner. “They played great tennis during the tournament.”
The Mids will close the fall season this coming weekend when it plays host to the Navy Invite.
