ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– The Navy men’s tennis team will open its 2018 season by playing host to a trio of opponents this weekend in the Tose Family Tennis Center. The Mids will face Saint Francis U. Saturday at 6 p.m., St. Bonaventure Sunday at 9 a.m. and Saint Peter’s Sunday at 1 p.m. on the opening weekend of dual match play across the country for the sport.

Navy returns nine letterwinners from last year’s team that posted an overall record of 22-8 and reached the finals of the Patriot League Tournament. Included among the returners from a year ago is Aries Wong (Sr., Bethesda, Md.), who earned first-team all-league accolades last season.

The Navy men’s tennis team opened its 2017 season by recording a pair of victories Sunday at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis. The Mids first posted a 6-1 victory over St. Bonaventure then notched a 4-3 victory over Saint Francis U.

“The start of the spring season is here, which is exciting for the team,” said Navy’s fourth-year head coach Chris Garner. “The team has been taking advantage of its practice time to be prepared for the competitive weekend ahead. Beginning with a strong team from Saint Francis followed by an always solid St. Bonaventure squad and finishing with the upstart Saint Peter’s team, it will be a great weekend of tennis and competition.”

Leading the Mids in singles wins during the 2017 fall slate were Matthew Lee (So., San Diego, Calif.) with a 12-4 record and Walker Sims (Sr., Memphis, Tenn.) with an 11-2 record. Also reaching double digit wins were Peter Lohrbach (Fr., Little Neck, N.Y.) and Andrew Ton (Fr., Milpitas, Calif.), both of whom ended the autumn with 10-4 records.

On the doubles side, Romesh Kahatapitiya (Fr., Virginia Beach, Va.) paced Navy with a 10-6 record, while both Lee and Joshua Martin (Sr., Foley, Ala.) posted nine wins.

Saint Francis U. tallied a 15-5 record during the 2017 season and posted a 4-0 record against fellow Northeast Conference foes. The Red Flash reached the finals of last year’s NEC Tournament.

Navy and Saint Francis have played close matches against one another in each of the last two seasons. The Red Flash came away with a 4-3 victory in 2016 and the Mids won a 4-3 decision in the 2017 meeting of the teams.

St. Bonaventure opens its spring season Friday at Loyola. The Bonnies posted an overall record of 8-15 in 2017 and had a 2-5 mark in Atlantic 10 Conference matches a year ago.

Navy defeated St. Bonaventure 6-1 in last year’s match between the squads.

Saint Peter’s ended the 2017 season with a 0-7 record in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and a 1-21 record for the entire campaign.

Sunday’s match will be the inaugural meeting between the Mids and the Peacocks.
