ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team will continue its spring season this weekend with a pair of matches at home Saturday followed by a Sunday evening match at No. 1 ranked Virginia. The Midshipmen will play host to St. Joseph's and St. Francis (N.Y.) at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively, Saturday at the Tose Family Tennis Center before traveling to Charlottesville, Va., for a 6 p.m. match the following day against the defending NCAA champion Cavaliers.
"We will need to be prepared for St. Joseph's and St. Francis," said Navy head coach John Officer. "We had a very competitive match with St. Joseph's last year and we expect the same this year.
"Playing against Virginia is a great opportunity for our program. Very few teams get the chance to compete against the reigning national champion and pre-season number one team in the country. Coach Brian Boland does a fantastic job and was very deserving of his first national championship last year. We will need to be aggressive from the start and play with a good deal of passion."
Navy opened its season last weekend with a 5-2 loss to No. 45 BYU and a 7-0 win over Saint Francis (Pa.).
Saturday's match against the Mids will be the first of the season for the Hawks, while the Terriers will face Navy one day after they play at Loyola.
The Mids won a 4-3 decision over St. Joseph's and a 7-0 match over St. Francis one season ago.
Navy faced Virginia in the opening round of the 2009 and 2010 NCAA Tournaments. The Cavaliers won both matches against the Mids by the score of 4-0.
