“There are lot of great opportunities for the team this weekend,” said Navy head coach Chris Garner. “We host La Salle, which has created more depth in their lineup, and the Sciences on Friday. On Saturday, Howard, which always comes out strong in doubles, will be a challenge while St. Francis is a very competitive team. A number of our players will be traveling down south to take on East Carolina and Winthrop. Both of those teams are loaded with international talent that we are looking forward to playing.”

Navy opened its season this weekend by posting victories over Saint Francis U. (7-0), St. Bonaventure (6-1) and Saint Peter’s (7-0).

La Salle opened its season with a 5-2 loss to Morgan State. The Explorers posted a 4-15 record a year ago and lost in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament. Last year’s 6-1 victory by Navy over La Salle was the first meeting between the teams.

The University of the Sciences is coming off of a 2017 season that saw it post an 11-11 record on the NCAA Division II level. The Mids defeated the Devils, 6-1, in 2016 in what was the first time the teams had faced each other.

Navy has defeated Howard by the score of 6-1 in each of the last three seasons. The Bison start the 2018 season Saturday after finishing the 2017 campaign with a 1-13 record.

St. Francis will open its 2018 season with matches Friday at Temple and Loyola. The Terriers ended last season with a 5-12 record and a loss in the opening round of the Northeast Conference Tournament. Navy and St. Francis have competed against one another in each of the last nine seasons. The Mids have won all nine matches, including a 5-2 victory in 2017.

East Carolina opened its season with a 4-3 victory over Presbyterian. The Pirates are coming off of a 2017 season that saw them post a 16-9 record and reach the quarterfinal round of the American Athletic Conference Tournament. Navy defeated East Carolina by the score of 6-1 in 2015, but the Pirates defeated the Mids by an identical score in 2017.

Winthrop’s lone match before this weekend was a 7-0 loss to North Carolina State. The Eagles reached the semifinal round of the 2017 Big South Conference Tournament and concluded the campaign with an 8-12 record. Saturday’s match will serve as the inaugural meeting between Navy and Winthrop.
